hi all,
I'm on a well with a softener. Plumbing is ageing and needing some repairs.
Problem areas are currently galv. Wondering whats recommended for use with softener salt ?
I worked for a plumber for a while and i'm fine with copper but i'm seeing lots of choices
out there now a days and wondering if one is better for this situation ?
thanks

Just to make sure I understand; you're not talking about the well pipe right?

Assuming you're talking about the household plumbing, I'd suggest you look into PEX. I'd avoid galvanized in general and any joints with dissimilar metals (e.g., copper to galvanized) because of potential galvanic corrosion issues. Transitions between metal and PEX should cause no problems.

Pex is the modern pipe of choice, it is so very easy to install and so much more durable than the alternatives. Much cheaper too. It is extremely rare to see anything other than pex used anymore. In fact, it seems that only the old guys with tons of prepruchased pipe and fittings are using anything else. It is just so much better.

well.........yes that was for house plumbing.
Looks like 2 votes for Pex..........
i'll take a look
thanks

Having a well has nothing to do with what pipe type you choose. Well water may have more sediment that you can filter but it won't hurt the pipe. PEX is polyethylene, or plastic, which is totally immune to the effects of most chemicals and corrosion.

PEX again. Copper is great but if you're starting from new PEX is great too.

highbeam,
The reason i was thinking that being on a well might make a difference was due to the softener salt
being added in the water. Was just wondering how that might affect the copper or galv pipe ?

Make that +3 for PEX.
I don't think ANYBODY ever burned
down a house installing PEX...

That sounds like a challenge! :)
