Can't help but notice the increase in posts especially from new members. Makes me think fall is right around the corner! But kudos to those who are thinking ahead. I hope they also think ahead on their fuel supply. Now if we could just bottle up some of this heat to use in January...

I"ve been heating with with wood for many years and I still look forward to it. This summer hasn't been too good to me so I will welcome cold weather. Around 3 months to go!

Oh man I wish. The hottest weather is still ahead of us here. I really do dislike the heat! Good wood seasoning weather though!

+1, but it's been cooler and ALOT damper than normal (at least I believe so ;-) )

Early July, still no 90's, but the relative humidity seems to track at, or above, the temps. I'll take the "cold" over the heat any day; twice on Sundays! Always can work harder to keep warmer, but you can't take your skin off to get cooler...

For sure we've had a few hot days here but the last few days have been absolutely beautiful. Like today, the temperature was mid 80's but very comfortable because of the low humidity. I looked around 2:00 and the humidity in Lansing was 28 and Saginaw was 32. Very little wind. Just a fantastic day and how I wish the whole summer would be just like today.

As for wood burning, we're a bit under 3 months to the start. As for the wood cutting, I'm about 5 months from that.

Amen to being able to bottle this stuff. I could make it intolerable in the house with just a little of the monster heat we have. At least we have nice mild winters, for the most part...ice storms are a killer here.

I also noticed a bit of a up tick in the newer people on this site...put that one down to higher energy costs Im sure.

Im focused on only 8 more weeks of high humidity and heat and hope this is the case. bought ski passes this week and prepared more kindling wood. so you know im ready for cooler days. happy 4th.

Let's not rush summer away, I have only had my boat out 3 times so far. And I am not looking forward to "winterizing" anytime soon.

I'm torn, I love summer days like the few we've had today, as described by Dennis, but the humidity is a killer. I've gotta admit, I'm already sick of the bugs & tourists though. The bummer on this side of MI is the clouds all winter due to the lake. I love 20-25* & bright sunshine, we just don't get that here much. Here's to 75 & sunny till Sept. The a cool sunny autumn that lasts till deer season.

BTW imho I'm guessing a lot of the uptick in traffic here is also due to the quality of the info & people here. Just a thought. A C

The traffic of new folks here always starts to ramp up about this time every year. Folks start remembering last years heating bills and thinking about next year's. And hoping for deals on stoves during the summer. It will steadily pick up through September and explode when they are joined by the returning members in the fall.

That might be for some folks, OR, it might be for other folks that they have always heated as much as possible with wood ... but ... they had a regular old open factory built fireplace and found out from their local chimney sweeping company (upon an annual cleaning at the end of every heating season) that their old triple wall air insulated chimney had collapsed within itself with some warping and was absolutely not safe for future use.

So if all the above things might be then it also might be that between the end of last season and the start of this season, they are scrambling around learning everything that they can, asking all sorts of stupid things (despite trying not to), tearing out their old factory built fireplaces, converting their old chases to new alcoves that then transition to chases, and are anxiously awaiting the days ahead when a warm safe stove will be heating their homes!

Not sure if it applies to all the new members, but it might apply to some. :) Anyways although I've always attempted to supplement some heat with my fireplace, I seriously cant wait to heat the house with the stove. It will be so much more reliable, functional, fun, efficient and attractive. Most importantly it will be much much safer than the factory fireplace. Anyways, no matter why we come we all really appreciate the assistance this site offers. Thanks.

Agreed. I enjoy the lush greenery and teeming life of Summer. A few bug bites don't bother me that much. After a long, sweaty day of working outside, nothing beats taking a shower and cracking a cold one. :) If it's in the mid nineties and humid for a couple of weeks straight, I'm ready for a break...but not for Winter. That's way too long a break.

In Central NY the weather has been A+ for almost every day the past few weeks. Mid to upper 80s, light winds, low humidity etc. For the once a week the wife actually lets me go out in my little row boat and fish, I've spent the past 4 or 5 trips not fishing as hard, just looking around Oneida Lake and marveling at just how kind nature can be and how lucky I am to be able to enjoy it once in a while. This past couple of weeks I have been very thankful.

+1 Summer is my favorite time of the year.

Summer always seems my favourite time of year when it's MidWinter, 15f outside, the water supply is frozen and I'm out there with a pick axe trying to get through to some water for the livestock.

Funny, right now, I can sit on the verandah with a cool beer, thinking about those lovely Winter evenings sitting toasting myself by the stove ;-)

Still enjoying Summer . . . taking dips in the pool, ATV rides, camping . . . no need to rush into the winter.

As much as I'm ready to start burning for the first full year. Im still enjoying this weather that we are recieving and all that it brings (i.e. Gardening and Canning for this winters pleasures). I've got (or should have) this full year's ready to go, pending I dont exceed 6 cords this coming winter.

I just wish I had a wood powered A/C unit... in the low 90's today and enjoying it for the most part. Walked by my pile of fresh split maple and could smell it drying in the full sun. That was nice - probably the best drying it will get over the next couple years as I will have to move it off the front sidewalk per wife's orders shortly. But I'll delay a few days - too hot to move wood and why waste good drying days to stick it in the side yard out of the sun? ha.

Burning days will be here soon enough - I'll be happy enough when they do arrive simply because I enjoy the art. However kids are out of school, learning to ride bikes on the road and take 'real' rides - i.e. out of the neighborhood (and to ice cream shops of course). It seems time goes by fast enough as it is - kids growing up, seasons changing... no need to rush any of it.

Wood spitting in this heat mostly makes me anxious for the fall. Not too cold, can still have a fire...and of course i look forward to spending time in the woods hunting. Only thing better than cutting. Have been shopping around for stoves too hoping to find a deal now that i have the time.

Backwoods, i take it you too are looking forward to the change in the light golden brown coats the deer are sporting for the greys of fall/winter?

Yes Sump. Although summer is hard to beat, especially because of all the fresh food to eat (strawberries now done and raspberries just getting started; peaches next month, etc.) fall is still my favorite time of the year. Not only for the hunting but it also means an end to the danged flying insects. The fall colors are especially a treat to the eyes and we look forward to that every year. It also means no more air conditioning and then you can do some heavy work outdoors without feeling like you are in an oven. One bad thing is that it also means for me an end to the good weather for bike riding but the end of that means the start of hunting and following that the wood cutting. Overall, I still like the 4 seasons of the year; each has its advantages and disadvantages.

For the want to be wood burners, it's never to early to be working on a stove purchase and install. A good stove store gets booked up with installations in the fall. I had to wait 3 months and then shoveled the snow off the roof in January's to do it. And then there is the wood, which we all know should have been started last year. But for me, I'm gettin my fire fix doing firepit burns with the grand kids and sipping on a glass of red. Lets not rush it, enjoy the summer.

Letting the electric company haul juice into the air conditioners is easier than hauling splits into the house. I can live with this for a while.

I can appreciate that. When I lived in humid country I was fine with the heat, as long as there was water nearby that I could swim in. Our summers (when they happen) are dry and bug free, so I had forgotten what it is like with mayflies, mosquitos and black flies. They do put a dent in summer fun. Seattle area weather is crazy. We go from gloom and damp in June to dry in July. So much so that Seattle's July rainfall average is below Arizona!

I remember reading that very same thing BeGreen. We've been to your area only one time and it was in July or August; don't remember for sure. But I do remember that we were pleasantly surprised to find it rather dry and had good weather all the time we were there.

Now for Arizona, just look at that dust storm that just hit Phoenix! Dust with 70 mph winds! Nasty stuff.
