I have a Stihl Farm Boss 029 and just paid a shop to tune it and fix it. He put a new main bearing in, said it was why it would stall when the chain break was engaged.

I ran it a bit this weekend, and the chain kept getting too tight, and had to be loosened twice. I pointed it at a fresh cut end, no oil. I removed the bar and chain, no oil from the oil port. I poked a thin wire in there, no difference.

Might something inside be plugged? How do I get it apart to clean? Is there an oil pump that can fail?

Thanks

Flush the oil tank a couple time with kerosene....Fire it up with out the bar on and run it with the 2nd tank of kerosene and see if you can get it pumping, if so switch back to bar oil and rock on! ;-)

Oil pump on those is driven by a wire behind the clutch drum. The wire fits into a notch on the drum. If the clutch drum was removed for service (bearing replacement...) then it's possible that the drum isn't engaging the oil pump drive anymore.

Had the same problem with my 036 last week. Oiler quit. I ended up taking it to the dealer. +1 on what Jay said w/ Kero. That will get any "Junk" out of there. I

Hope to get it back this week. I know its an off chance at it being the same problem. But I can PM you the diagnoses?

DexterDay, let me know what he finds.

I'll pick up some kerosene and try the flush.

How do I remove the clutch drum? I pulled off the split ring, and there is a washer next, that didn't come off easily. Should I fight it off of the shaft, or is there something else? It looks like it might only be burred, which reduced the inside dimension enough so keep it on. With that washer off, will the drum come off?

Thanks for the replies everyone.

Once the washer is off, the drum should slide off the crankshaft easily. Shouldn't be a whole lot of pressure on the washer either. With the chain brake released and the whole thing assembled, you should be able to spin the sprocket drum by hand freely. If there is a groove worn into the sprocket teeth from the chain then now is the time to get a new drum/sprocket. I usually would recommend replacing the bearing too but seeing as how that was just done, make sure it's ok and you don't have excessive play between the bearing and the sprocket bore. It should slide in easily and spin freely but you shouldn't be able to "wobble" the drum noticeably.

Stopped in to check out the 036. It will be done today. As of yesterday, the Service Manager said its gonna be about $130 (+ or - $10). That's including a set of new Main Bearings. Overall, its not Bad. Mechanic was tapping old bearings out and said I shouldn't have another problem out of this Saw for a Long Time. Will post a rundown of the Bill later when I get home. I could have got it yesterday, but my Son has Football practice everyday and I didn't have an hour to sit there.
$130 aint bad. Could have been worse. Considering what I have in it.

It was $120. New Worm gear, bearing, and springs... I thought he said "Main Bearing" yesterday. Not that bad. But still sucks to buy a Saw off your buddy and put money into it the 1st week.....

Here is the New pics with the new 20" bar and full chisel chain. Gonna run the Pi$$ out of it tomorrow.....

Maple "Stones".. Took some of the short rounds and cut them to 1 1/2" thick. Prob wont last long. But if I can get 2 yrs out of them, Im good to go. Only took 10 mins to cut'em.

Sorry to the OP. Didnt mean to Highjack. Back to your Regular scheduled programming
