Everyone is preparing for it so just wondering when it should be. Average date and location if not on ur profile. For me its usuallay around October 15th.

When the wife threatens to turn on the propane heat in the house. Usually mid October as well. A C

Usually October. Been bringing wood from wood pile to deck rack a little each night, cutting up skids. My rule is 45∘ or cooler outside by 7 PM the wood stove gets lit which leaves enough time to get the stove heated up an cruising before bed, hotter then that but the house is cold I use the propane furnace.

As I said last year, I wish heating season was a month on a month off. I am so itching for cold weather to get the stove going but by the end of January I start wishing for and early summer.

Thanksgiving weekend here in Michigan. It's cold by then and I don't tire of burning wood by February. Also the neighbors that may not like wood smoke odor are usually finished with all the leaf work.

When the temps start gettin in the lower 40's at night we start burning. Usually thats mid to late October. We hold out as long as we can, but with lil ones in the house my wife doesn't like it gettin much cooler then 65. Funny how that works...... in the summer time 65 would be great, but in the colder months 65 is chilly !

Easy shortly after I turn the a/c off 3 wks of windows open leaves I love the Fall

No specific date, I'll light the stove when the house is cool enough that I want heat. I'd light the stove tomorrow if the house was cold. Around here that usually happens the end of September or early October.

Kinda depends a whole bunch on where you live (Latitude and elevation, mostly) and your personal preferences in terms of comfort. Here's where I live:

You can find a "Compare Locations" function that's pretty cool if you click on the "Monthly Averages" pull-down menu in upper left of the graph display.

I'd imagine some folks up in Alaska and parts of Canada are probably already burning, at least part time. Around here where I live, overnight temps in the 40's and below are the norm most of the year. After a warm day, it makes for nice sleeping weather. Humidity here in the high desert is very low, so I don't have A/C installed in my home...I leave windows at least partially open for about 6 months out of the year, then button up and start burning whenever the temps start telling me it's time. They're not telling me it's time yet this year...I expect early/mid October. But you never know. Rick

Holy cow, I am hoping that I will not have to start burning until early to mid November. Hoping that living in Maryland makes a difference versus you guys in Michigan, Indiana, Iowa, etc. Right now, it is in the mid 60's here at night and the mid 80's during the day. I don't think I have even fathomed turning on the heat until late October, and that is just because it is slightly cold in the house at night. We are still working on getting the furnace installed, so mid October might be making it tight. Still working on stacking the wood too. I have 1.5 cords stacked, another 1.5 cords of seasoned wood to stack, and about another 2 or 3 cords that I need to stack for next winter. Good thing about it getting cold is that I will not be sweating quite as much when I am out cutting, splitting, and stacking wood. I hope to get far enough ahead that I will never have to do this again during the summer.

First burn for me could be....May, June, July, August or September. So if you plan to make it too November and have to light up in Oct, don't feel so bad. ;-) Keep collecting that fire wood.
Cheers

We will be waiting for that day of your 1st burn. I have a feeling it will not be at the end of Sept this year. Cooler outside temps or not.

We're usually doing fires the end of Sept., early October.
Last year was middle of Sept., but only because I got the stove repaired and wanted to check it out. It was cool enough.....really, it was. :cheese:

With around 60 consecutive days of temps over 100 degrees I can't wait for it to get cool enough to burn. Not in a hurry, really. We love the Autumns here when it's cool enough to open every window in the house and keep it that way for several weeks.

I don't burn unless the overnight temps are forecast to be 40 or lower. That varies from year to year but I don't anticipate it happening here before mid to late November and even then it won't be consistently that low for a few more weeks.

Inside or out?

I'll burn when I get cold . . . or more likely when my wife gets cold. Could be in a day or two . . . could be in a few weeks.

I get itchy for a fire as we get near Halloween....then as needed at night 'tll Thanksgiving. After that, its pretty much "all fire - all the time"

Last year it was 10-17-2010 and this year we had a small fire on 8-22-2011 if my memory is correct.

Usually middle or end of september here. Wood is my only heat so when the house gets chilly, I fire it up.

I try to not fire anything up until November.

Like rdust, usually late September or early October. For sure when we are getting frost we'll probably need a short fire. I believe the earliest we've had a fire was shortly after Labor Day one year; probably around the 8th but don't remember for sure. Quite often it gets frosty in September but sometimes it does not happen until early October. We've even had a few 90 degree days the end of September and 80 is not out of the question for early October (but usually only 1 or 2 days of that). I usually go bow hunting October 1 and it is not uncommon to have frost that morning.

Conclusion is we'll have a fire when the house gets too cool. We try to keep it comfortable.

I suspect we will light up when we get home from our holiday at the end of next month, after a week away in Wales the house will probably feel a bit chilly inside.

So it'll probably be 25th September here :)
