I've been researching gasification boilers for three years & getting close to pulling the trigger. I keep coming back to Garn. But, I have a couple questions. Wood size? I have a sawmill & plan on burning a mixture of slab wood & logs. Anyone using slab wood? Also on the web site I didn't see any firebox dimensions for the length of the wood. Also curious about electrical requirements. I plan on building a 16' x 32' addition on my garage this year. I will do post & beam & next year dig the water supply & pour concrete then frame walls in after garn installation. Was also hoping to see a unit in operation. Anyone close to Candor NY 13743. About 20 minutes from Ithaca, one hour from Syracuse.
Thanks,
Jim

Howdy Neighbor....I'm in Berkshire...no more than 20 minutes from you. I have a Garn 1500 up and running since last Nov. My splitter is only 24" capable, so my wood is about 23". One has to keep it towards the back of the firebox for best burn, but you learn that pretty quick. I've been very happy with our unit. You can come over and see it anytime....get in touch via PM.

You might want to check out Switzer boilers over in Dundee. Same general concept as Garn, but is pressurized, can be heated up over 200 degF, needs no heat exchangers, and is pressurized.

Thanks Bruce I'll PM you soon. Eliot, I'm the code officer in Candor & have seen two Switzers installed & they are nice systems. It will either be a Garn or Switzer, just haven't seen the Garn up close yet.
Thanks,
jim

Hi,

New to forum. I have a Garn 2000 running, also a sawmill and burn slabs. Just down the road in Nichols. Your welcome to visit.

Tom

Jim, I have been burning balsam/spruce slabs the last month. I use the brick at the intake and they have been burning great without puffing. I have a Woodmizer LT40HD. I have slabs that are in different stages of drying. I only burn the dry ones.

Curious as to whether the Switzer is ASME rated. If it's not how do you deal with it under boiler code rules?

Hi Heaterman,
I was provided documentation from the manufacturer. Automated test labs, Philadelphia Pa. did the testing. Compliant with NFPA -211, UL Standard 391 & UL Standard 726. I also required confirmation from an Engineer that the boiler is compliant with all applicable NY Building Codes.

Jim - take note that the Switzer pulls combustion air from the boiler room rather than from outside. If you go with a Switzer plan for makeup air (I am sure they will tell you this). The GARN pulls combustion air from outside and pre-heats it before reaching the air collar.

If you have any GARN questions PM me or Steve.

Jim K,
Thanks for the info. I require outside air to all solid fuel burning devices. Are you a Garn dealer? The reason I ask is when I contacted Garn for info they gave my contact info to a dealer in New Jersey. Nothing wrong with NJ, but I'm only 90 minutes north from This Warm House in Pa.
Thanks,
jim
