Hope everyone is surviving Irene. We took some trees down today. They had grown too big and too close to the house. Prevention is best. My son will get the wood. We only use pellets now. I am betting there will be a fresh supply of firewood after Irene passes by.

Don't need anymore trees down! I'm still cutting up trees at my in-laws from the tornado in June!

Bracing for the worst here on Cape Cod, and hoping for the best. Stay home and be safe!

Hello

X2, quite a few years ago I had all the trees cut down near to the house. Then I planted trees near to the street!! The new trees are now 15 to 25 feet tall and are developing nice. Many homes in my neighborhood still have some very old trees close to the house. People like the shade from these trees and for the past 10 or 12 mild storm years had no reason to cut them down!!!

So if this storm has 74 MPH winds like they predict, there may be quite a few homes that may see some real damage!! I pray everyone will be safe!!

So for now, I have my stash of pellets and enough propane and candles to light our home. Just have to start taking in the deck chairs and removing the window air conditioners and check that our cell phones have a full charge.

Gave the generator new oil and a full tank. Ran it for half hour to make sure it was good to go. Have 2 spare portable sump pumps to go along with the one installed in the basement. I look forward to not needing any of them.

Believe it or not Mayor Bloomberg says my section of the Bronx has to evacuate by 5:00 pm tomorrow.

It looks like she will be a tropical storm by the time she gets here. (Hampton, NH) I have the motorhome fueled and the cord run into the transfer switch so I guess I'm as ready as I can be. At least I won't need to keep the stove running! Stay safe everyone!

Being on the east side of the projected path is worse. Weather station says inland 70 mph winds. Saturated ground will result is many trees falling over and power outages up to a week. Will need to ck in on our elderly neighbors.
Pulled the air conditioners, have water, filled trash cans with water so we can flush, Blankets to cover the frig and freezer. I know, all common sense but it is reassuring to go through the list and know you have done what you can and the rest is what will be.

Save$.... Sounds like you are ahead of the curve... I hope everyone gets through the storm without a hitch.. Natural Disasters are still amazing to me. It doesn't matter if its a Tornado, Tsunami, Earthquake, Hurricane, Wild Fires, Etc.. The devastation and heartache that these things bring is unreal.

Stay safe, Stay well, and God Bless.

Looks like she is headed straight at us! My MIL is named Irene and she wasn't due here till mid September???? :ahhh:

We are headed out this morning for supplies(ice, batteries, candles, gas and food ect! That is if there is anything left on the shelfs????) just in case. Gonna spend the day battening down the hatches!

Stay safe all!

Im going to be on Standby at the Fire Department , we have all our Trucks Fueled up all chainsaws gased and oiled. We were hearing from our closest Hospital thats our ALS provider that if the Winds are over 60mph + they will not be sending any paramedics or ambulances out.

Im prepping our yard today and going to be praying our barn does not go down it has been through a lot.

Stay Safe and please stay off the roads if you dont need to be on them!

wow never thought about the ac units..good idea will take them down after lunch....
secured the snowmobile trailer, gas grill strapped to the pool deck, cut all softwood trees last year so that's ok...
gonna fire up the generator also after lunch, pick up, full of fuel, 30 pack of cold ones, bottle of vodka for bloody mary's in the morning......
according to the latest weather, suppose to be just a tropical storm now, governor issues a state of emergency...

While those of you are home and safe, please send a thought out to those of us that have to work in storms like these to protect you and respond should you need us. Most folks have no idea what it's like to put yourself in harms way for others. In my line of work, I'm always away from my family at the worst of times. Having said that, the generator is fueled and ready to go and my wife and kids will be hunkered down by late evening tonight. To all my fellow First Responders....BE SAFE.

Lst bad storm we had was a nightmare had one PT that had a tree fall on her MV . On way to scene it was constant zig zag and power lines down. As an EMT in the back it was a wonderful ride not!

Stay Safe and watch the Power Lines!

Yes, a big THANK YOU!! for all of you that have to go out in these types of emergencies....you guys are the BEST!

Myself, just finished putting the final things in order.....took down 'ol glory and decorative flags, put LONG extensions on the gutter downspouts to get water as far away from the foundation as possible (AND secured the ends to the ground to keep from blowing away), secured the gas grill, picnic table, and garbage cans.

Had the propane tank filled yesterday, so generator should be good for at least 3 - 4 days, and got some food for the frig. and pantry (including 30 "adult beverages"...LOL).

Prepared for the worst, but hoping for the best.

Be safe everybody!!

with my area being in a flood zone, I am glad I did not Pick up my pellets yet, hopefully the ton I have left stays dry

Hello

I luv a good map that shows what is going on and here is another good one!!

So What does 70 mph wind speed do for damage?

from >> http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20110825080202AAdpIOZ
We had a thunderstorm this summer with 60 mph hour winds and it leveled a barn just down the road, the winds blew a lot of trees down, some into people's houses. It was strong enough to make the glass on my window bulge.

70mph winds could do light damage to structures, roofs, roof shingles peeled up, small tree branches would be broken off, any small objects could be blown away.

Some tree branches will give way. Older trees will be uprooted.
