Need advice on downed trees

Just to make sure I understand correctly, this is an easy project that any beginner should attempt?

I went down today and took some pictures. I think a come along and a chain will get it down for me. I don't need the wood or care so much about that. I don't like the relatively precarious nature of the arrangement. While it is on my property, the gully isn't really delineated and I'm afraid that neighboring kids might wander in and decide to walk up the tree. It's certainly what I would have done as a kid!

This is really a swamp maple - calling it a root ball is being overly generous, but I take the point about not cutting that away. I like the come along and chain approach because I can be a good distance away when the tree drops down!
