Neighbor had a good size branch of Locust come down a couple of weeks ago.

I chopped it up and he gave me some small stuff and bigger stuff on another pile out behind his shed...

Yes.. I know my piles i the shed fell.. I'd blame it on the east coast earthquake but it was already toppled over before that LOL

So I had ordered a load in April.. yes, that's right April, finally showed up today. Bad rains in the spring, logger had a truck trouble in the summer, no one else I found had the picker on the back, got too hot this summer. etc etc. Well the load showed up today. I got work to do!

:cheese:

Some ash in the pile and he said there is some real old maple in the pile. Hopefully some of it will burn late season.

Nice stack of wood there, nice stack of work too..........

Funny how wood companies take orders for wood in Spring, and are suddenly able to fulfill the orders after a hurricane..... ;-)

Wow that's a nice pile of logs!! How many cord do you think you'll get out of that?

That sounds like a good deal to me! It is a lot of work to cut and split that much wood for sure..

The last load I got from him was ended up about 7 cords. His price was $700. I found another guy closer to me that would have been $50 cheaper, I was looking for another guy when I had some many problems trying to get him to deliver. I didn't think the other guy would have been able to unload in the same spot since his picker was behind the cab instead of hanging off the back.

i think in the spring that is what im gonna do is order a load like this....that will get me way ahead of the game..then ill cut some on my own as i go....gonna buy a truck in the spring........how long does it take u to work this load up?

Is it possible to save the grass with a load of wood and all the saw dust from cutting and splitting? I had two big oak trees taken down in my backyard and after all the cutting and splitting there was so much saw dust a lot of the grass died. I tried sweeping everything with a lawn sweeper but it was impossible to get the saw dust since it gets right down into the grass. Any tips on keeping the grass nice in that spot or is it just a given that it's going to be ruined?

I raked it up as quick as I could the last time and dragged it out back into the woods with a tarp. The grass was fine where I did the cutting. The last load I got he couldn't get it all the way out back. I have since added the concrete pad on the side of the garage and the shed out back. Since I had so much trouble with him the last spring with all the rain I might try again this spring and really stock up.

Rake as much as you can. If you want to do a really neat job, use a shop vac after raking.

$100 a cord for green logs seems really high. What does a cord of split and stacked run up there?

In Mass. that would be a good deal with cord prices running around $225.00 c/s/d ..

Thought I'd post an update on this. It's been a bit of a hectic fall but I'm still plugging away at the pile. I gave my Dad a little over 2 face cord. I cut a bunch a little longer for him and we split them as we loaded it in his truck.

Shed's full. The first 4.5 stacks are old, the last 5 are new.

Got a good size pile to split still...

Unfortunately I seem to have too much time on my hands and it continues rain or I have interruptions when I get started on it. I'll get though it eventually. :)

Yes it is possible. I cut almost all of my wood in the same area and the grass is fine. If the logs lay in one place too long the grass under the logs will die. No way around that, but the definition of too long changes with season and temperature. if it is cold you might have grass survive a month or more, maybe a lot more under a log. In the summer too long can be a week or two. As for the saw dust, that will suck up nitrogen as it rots and so will starve the grass, plus it will smother the grass if there is too much. I just take my lawn mower with a bag and pick up all the sawdust I can pick up. I get most of it. For my grass the main long lasting damage is from the maul when I split on the grass. I think of that as overenthusiastic aeration of the lawn.
