I really need a pickup truck now that I am collecting firewood

My brother in law had a choke cherry and an ash tree come down during Irene. He had a bunch of wood that he couldn't use so asked me if I wanted it. Sure thing! I was eager to use my new chainsaw anyway. But how to get the wood home? I don't own a pickup truck, and for 95% of the time don't need one so I drive a small car that is pretty good on gas. Not wanting to rent a pickup, I just used what I had and drove very carefully...

2003 Mini Cooper S with a remarkable amount of room inside.

First trip, moving some of the really big pieces.

2nd trip this morning, moving the smaller leftover stuff:

I did use my wife's Volvo wagon to move a bunch of the wood also, and the pics don't include what I moved on Friday afternoon. I think out of the four total car trips I ended up with a ton of wood. Not the most efficient way, but a lot cheaper than payments on a new truck... though that is sounding really really appealing right now!!!

Whatever works for ya. but i have to laugh i've never seen that before.

E for Effort! Hope you got the upgraded payload package on that thing!

Would the wifes Volvo pull a small trailer?

Thats Classic.
I love the tenacity.
Gotta get the wood, do whatever u can.

My commuter car is an Accord and I've used it to haul many scrounges home.

There's an a-cord pun in there somewhere but I'm just not quick enough to put it together.

I used to have a Saturn SL2 Sedan that I hauled ton of wood in . the back seats would fold down connecting the passegner cabin with the trunk. You can put a 7 foot log in an SL2, but you can't get the car into reverse while the log is in there.

I feel your pain, been picking up wood with a Suburu since Irene. Meanwhile some of the guys here are posting pics of their F-250's with a trailer and a Stihl on the tailgate. But I'm not jealous!

One of the only reasons I have a pickup it to move wood. I appreciate your dedication to the art of scrounging....

Thats Awesome... If I see the exhaust right, then you have the "S" Model. Which is Super-Charged. At least it has the power to do so.

Love it... Prob not the greatest way to haul firewood. But use what you got.

I have an F250 and a trailer and there are days that I wish I had a cooper.

Thanks for all the replies. I thought it was a pretty fun exercise, though I didn't have much of an option since the Volvo was in use elsewhere.

Yes, it is a supercharged Cooper S, and has the upgraded handling package - though they don't make an upgraded payload package. :)

Wood-fan-atic: great suggestion and if I really get into it I might have to choose to do a trailer. Right now there is no place on the property to nicely store one (just less than 1/2 an acre) so would have to choose to keep a car out in the open and trailer in the garage.

I've been evaluating this very question myself. I only need a pick-up about 10 days a year, but they are so handy...

I recommend, for wood hauling, getting a subaru outback wagon 2.5i or 3.0 (3.0 is alot more expensive because it comes trimmed out, but is available from ~2005-2009) and a small trailer.

You'll get vastly better fuel economy, good comfort, more utility, a better AWD system for road/snow handling, and you'll still have nearly 70 cubic feet of room inside the Subie and then whatever the trailer will get you. I believe they can safely tow 2000 pounds - so between the trailer and the trunk, you can get 1/2 a cord per trip of almost any wood.

Also, outbacks, especially the 2.5i versions, are very inexpensive to own. I've considered a nice volvo station wagon too - but they increase ownership costs significantly and, in AWD trim, are much more likely to have problems with their drivetrains.

Use what ya got. I do think perhaps a trailer would not be a bad idea at all. I do love the Cooper loaded with wood pics though.

I realize this isn't everybodies solution but I drive a Dodge Cummins diesel that is my everyday driver. It's got four doors, it's four wheel drive, it has a bed, it's got all of the interior creature comforts. In stock form it was getting 16mpg around town and 20 on the highway no exaggeration. I've owned it for going on eight years and 112,000 miles and expect at least triple that before it goes to pasture.

So it's a commuter, a pickup truck, a family SUV, my travel trailer puller and my plow truck all in one. Now if that's not saving coin I don't know what is. Between my Wife's 2004 Buick Rainer and my 2004 Dodge truck, we haven't purchased a vehicle in eight years. No plans to do it anytime soon either. And both are American iron.

Not only that it's my sports car! It will run high 13's..... and it's only a six cylinder moving a 7500 lb vehicle... I outrun most sports cars out there. They can't believe it... usually they don't bother looking at me after I "shamed" them but some ask me what the heck just happened to them

Oh and did I mention it's about as safe as it gets in the event of an accident?

Also it retains value way more than typical vehicles. I just did a Kelly Blue Book on it and it comes back $21,600 private party sale. I paid $39,000 for it in 2004.

BTW those are Hummer H2 wheels on it.

I'll tell ya what. Maybe we can work out a deal depending on where you are. I can haul your scrounges in my F-150 and, if there's a second seat in that thing, you give me a ride to work once in a while...

Seriously though...good for you! Get what you can, anyway you can.

One of the Lifestar crew has one that looks like it would be a fun ride to steal for a day. Heck, let's just steal the bird...that would be some cool scrounging!

Wow. That has got to be one of the Prettiest Pics I have seen in awhile. Runs 13's huh. My Buddy has a Duramax thats in the 13's. Its pushing on 1,000 ft lbs of Torque. Full Banks Intake, Exhaust, Turbo, Programmer, Larger Intercooler, Studed< Etc. The Truck is a Beast. will break the 35's loose while rolling at 45 MPH. Crazy Fast. Your truck sounds the same way. He also averages around 20 MPG and he has a HEAVY Foot.

One day soon (Hopefully next Summer) I will trade in my 03 F-150 SuperCrew FX4. Been looking at getting a Diesel for some time now. Only makes sense. Power, Economy, More HP per dollar, and did I mention Power (LOL). Nice rig you got.

To the OP.... Work with what you got.. If it aint broke. Dont fix it.

Run what ya brung, my man. I do agree with the small trailer folks. A small 1000 pound trailer behind your mini might just be the ticket (check your specs for towing).

Don't let these boys with the big toys tell ya any different. ;-)

(full disclosure - big dodge 4x4 with 3500 pound 5x10 trailer for a wood hauler, just to complete the stereotype  )
