If I would of had my chimney in for the fireview I would have burned this evening. It is not quite cold enough to light the stove in the basement yet
but it is getting close. The weather monkeys are calling for snow at around 11K and I live at 8,500 so it is getting close.

We had our first fire last night, it was cool, windy, and raining outside.

We have some more warmer weather on the way, so I'll probably not burn again for while.

It was fun, and it got rid of a couple of punky bits of wood that had been sitting in the greenhouse.

Back to gardening now....... ;-)

Getting there. Highs in the mid 50s and lows in the low 40s. Once get gets to the 30s at night I will start burning.

It was in the upper 20's on Monday night and the mid 30's last night. We lit off the wood furnace on Monday evening partly to keep the chill off and partly to welcome the first round of cool weather. Of course, the mid 70's rolling in on a low pressure system for the weekend, so it will be a while before we burn in earnest.

Still plenty warm . . . but we're getting closer . . . days are getting shorter -- well daylight hours are getting shorter. ;)

66 degrees in the house and the dear wife is a bit chilly, so I've started our first fire of the season. It's just some scrap stove crate I had laying around.

Well, being a Blaze King I shouldn't have to reload until.. ohh.. February. Hopefully it will buzz when the spin cycle is complete.

The geese are flying over head, heading in your guys direction as I type. Your turn will soon come.

Please keep your geese up there, they poop all over our sidewalks down here!LOL

Today it's 60* and rainy, definitely has a chill to it. Still don't want to start up the stove, so I pulled out my other new toy, an Iheater, to take the chill out of the house.
Should be back in the upper 70's by the weekend.

I know the feeling... I lit my Summit last night, and it didn't take long for my wife to stand in front and enjoy the heat!

I can't figure my wife out. In early spring if it is 60 outside she says brrrr as soon as she steps outside of a 70 deg house. But in the summer when it's 60 outside in the evening and I start closing windows to retain some daytime warmth, she says "why are you closing them, it feels nice outside to me". We'll start burning when it drops below 50 and not before unless it is outside.

Was 32 this am when I awoke at 5:15.
House was at 60, and I was chilly, but no fire because the temp was supposed to rise to 70. If I hadn't gone to work, I may have started a small fire anyway.
I closed the windows last night since the forecast was for 40, but .....well, 32 isn't 40.
I'll be making fire soon enough, and watching all my hard work go up in smoke.

Well I lied, was 57* in the house when I got up this morning so I unplugged the chimney and made a fire. The extra 3ft length I added this summer seems to have helped a ton. I had decent draft and it was in the upper 40s outside. Last year it had to be at least in the low 30s to have decent draft.

Haha that sounds way too familiar! She knows I am looking for any reason to fire up the stove lol.. I warn daily that I might need to start the stove and I get "the look" if you know what I mean..

Dave are you still running the Ashley and if so how do you like it? Have any pics of it?

I refuse to light any fire until the month of October! lol
It got chilly here last night: it went down to 4 C. The house was 18.5 and it warmed up with the sun to 22.5
At this rate I will be lighting a fire on October 1st: I had better call my chimney sweep soon and get my wood in!

Dave, they said 70 for us today too but we only got to 64. Still no fire here though. However, I would at 32 degrees.

Yup, sometimes it is amazing what a few feet of pipe can do to improve draft.

I guess it was closer than I thought . . . last night it was cool and rainy outside . . . if I was a real man and was tough I could have handled the cool temps (or at least snuggled under a blanket while watching TV) . . . but instead I threw some scrap wood into the Oslo and fired it up . . . besides I wanted to test Thomas' Super Cedars . . . and holy cow . . . I am amazed . . . 1/4 of a Super Cedar and some scrap wood from the work shop (well my messy garage with some wood working tools in it) and I was off to town.

I just lit up a few minutes ago, not for the cold, but to try to drive some of the moisture out of the basement.

Sounds like you are going to have baked spiders down there soon Matt.

Is this now the official 'First Burn of the Season' Thread? If so, I'll check back in toward the end of October. :cheese:

Must be something about how close to the coast we are, or the fact that I only supplement with wood - but I always feel like we start late in these threads.

We often use the AC at least once or twice into late Sep, and rarely think about turning on the heat before mid-Oct. The house is small enough that using the stove before the day temps get down to the 40s just bakes us out of here. So typically I will start using the gas occasionally to take the edge off in late Oct and save the wood for Nov. Last couple years we didn't have an overnight fire before December.
