chimney fire extinguisher

They are called Chimfex flares. There was a plant in my home town that made them. It burned down about 10 years ago... and was finally demolished recently.

I've heard the best bet is to open the door and shoot a dry chemical fire extinguisher in the stove.

If you have easy access to the top of the chimney ( have a ladder to get up there ) A big plastic baggie of baking soda dropped down does a great job. The little plastic melts the bulk of baking soda falls and the draft ( and with a chimney fire BIG draft think freight train roar if it's going good) blows it back up the chimney and coats everything smoothering the fire. But of course several safety issues are obvious but depending how far fire department is away it might be worth the risk.
The are probally safer commercial products you can buy but don't know how good they work

Are you talking about one of these doo-dads? The way I read the directions is that you strike it like a big road flare, throw it in the firebox and shut all the dampers.

It's too funny that the factory burned down...makes me feel real safe. Oh well, it says it's used by professional fire fighters, guess that will have to be good enough for me. Hope I never have to use it!

The way I understand it is when you light the Chimfex flare and put it in the burn pot, it burns so hot and consumes so much oxygen that there is none left for the flue fire, thus putting it out. Remember a fire needs oxygen to burn, so if you take that element away it goes out. I think that is the theory behind that product. Now if it works or not? I dont know, but it makes sense to me.

No plans to manufacture more? Guess that means I have a rare antique! E-bay, here I come!!
