Saw this on CL today. It's just over a month old but I'm crossing fingers that they still have it, if so I'll be there ASAP to take all this campfire wood off their hands. At the very least I'll ask them to email me whenever they have more junk wood to get rid of! Since they listed their address and it's just down the road I'll take a drive by there tomorrow to see if there is any crappy wood laying around.

Campfire Wood

"Have lots of free Campfire wood that needs to be gone ASAP!! It is from a Locust tree we cut down. It is not recommended for burning in a woodstove because of the thick bark on it makes a lot of creosole. Perfect for campfires or bonfires though. No deliveries! Pick up at 56 South St. Lyman. Posting will be deleted when it is all gone! Thank you"

I hope you can get that Albert. Nothing beats free wood. Just don't burn it in your stove! Lol!

And watch out for that 'creosole'. :p

I better get rid of all the locust I just split and stacked. Did't know it creates creosote.

mis-information.
its epidemic.

well, come january i'm gonna kick my bare feet up in front of the stove stuffed with 2-year seasoned locust and have yet another chuckle.

yep...i hope this locust doesn't mess up my chimney with all that creosole.

Yup, best thing would be to burn it all up in a big bonfire!

It doesn't...it creates creosole.

I think that's that fancy new french creosote!

They just emailed me back and they still have that campfire wood!!! Probably no one paid attention to it because it was labeled Campfire wood. Can't wait to go load up the truck.

Free BL, split and seasoned. You dog...I never get that lucky! :smirk: I wonder how much "lots" is...

Good deal . . . I have yet to get my hands on any black locust . . . but I would love to burn some. Heck, next year I'll finally get to try out oak for the first time in my woodstove -- looking forward to burning some of that to be sure.

They said the power company cut it because it was too close to the lines. Sounds like some of the tree is still standing but there is a large pile with some big logs in it on the ground. It's about 5 minutes down the road so I'll swing by and take a look at lunch time.

I did tell them that BL is great firewood but they don't burn wood so they just want it off their lawn.

I just went to check out the wood and it was like striking gold. There is a large pile of bucked locust that has been sitting there for over a year and half. The bark was falling off most of the rounds and they were seasoned nicely. They are cut a little on the short side but I'm not complaining. Will be there loading up the truck tomorrow morning!

I'm not sure how I got so lucky because stuff like this never happens to me.

My neighbor told me the same thing. He said Locust has too much oil in it and will cause a chimney fire. I just nodded and went on about my business.

"Business" being cutting the locust into 17 inch rounds to get it into managable chucks so he can carry it to your truck to get it off his lawn? :)

Great score and I am a little green eyed right now!

I'll take care of it for you!! Wouldn't want you to get "creosole" in your stove.

That is a super duper score! I'll bet you could split that now and burn it in January. I have been scoring Black Locust like crazy this year. Here's my Locust wall.

It's about 3' longer now after Irene and there is still more where it came from. I will be burning BL all this year and most of next year.
On one of my scrounges this year I was warned that I couldn't burn Black Locust in my stove because it would burn too hot and damage my stove. I told them I would take my chances and loaded up.
