Never ever attempt to cut trees with downed power lines nearby. This 10 Dia. tree took down one leg of the power line on a pole in our driveway. The line was only 4 ft. from the ground with the tree pushing down. It never broke, never tripped the breaker on the pole and we never lost power. It did burn through the tree showing the power of electricity and a great reason to never, ever attempt to cut firewood around downed power lines. Also beware of the live ground gradient which could get you as you approach the tree. Be safe.

Right Ed. That can get pretty hot.

Seeing sand fused into a glass like substance was enough to make me wary of downed power lines.

A good safety measure is to wear those sneakers with lights in them. When the bulb gets too bright its time to get back in the truck and forget about scrounging.

Or if you get that tingly feeling in you body. Course one more step and you could smell like burnt toast. LOL

Good reminder. I cut a lot of wood from around our power lines and just hope nothing falls on them while I'm out working. I'm working on a Beech that came down on the lines last spring and has the burnt look to a section also, but it didn't burn through like yours.
