Got a surprise today out in the woods. Perhaps someone can ID this?

While I'm at posting pictures, here is another one I took a while ago. This is probably the biggest one I've seen. That tree won't get cut right away.

No idea what the first pic is, but that's a nice lokking hornet's nest. I used to shoot the branch holding them up, put them in a trash bag, then put in the freezer to sell....all this below freezing outside temps of course. Not sure why someone would want to buy one, but I was happy to sell them. 20 bucks was a big score for a kid.

Well, I'd certainly sell for $20 too.

Is that Overcup Oak? Nice nests.

zap

Zap, that was a pin oak.

Used to see those little fuzzy balls on an oak we had when I was a kid. There is an egg inside for some kind of parasitic bug. Don't know if I have ever seen the adult but some of those can get about the size of a small marble and turn kind of yellow in color.

Cave, yes it does look like an egg of some sort inside. They are quite small; more like BB size. They also break off the leaf really easy.

I'll give you $1 for it if you pay shipping. That oak leaf is totally unique, almost cute; pink, fuzzy, Must be a fungus of some kind.

Dennis, I'll give you $10 plus shipping. Can you ship tomorrow?

Wow, what a nest! I'd hate to have somehow missed it and accidentally made them mad. That would be a bad day for someone with an allergy to bee stings!

Pretty intimidating too. I unintentionally dug up a good nest sized last weekend. They looked like a tornado for about 1/2 an hour until they dispersed. Glad I was in the cab of the machine and no one was around.

Not tomorrow but would be happy to do it in January. ;-)

Hmmm . . . wonder if the buggers know something we don't . . . this is the second time in so many days that I've seen pics of a very large wasp/hornet nest.

Old folklore is the higher the hornet's nest, the deeper the snow. Not sure about size.

The bigger the nest . . . the better the party inside? ;) :)

That surely sounds right Jake.
