Ok, so I picked it up today. Had been listed on CL for only a little while but the seller said he had tried to sell it last spring as well.

This unit and two others (different models) were acquired at auction for a fireplace shop that went out of business. I figure they must have all been floor display models but who knows. At any rate the seller was nice to deal with, held it for me despite having received a couple other emails from people interested who were closer to him than I was.

Anyway, since ya'll like pics so much here's a shot of it in the back of the truck just after I got home. Liner kit will be ordered next week. Hopefully no snags to getting this installed yet this season.

Looks like the Rainer. Did you get legs or pedestal? That is a nice looking stove. Enjoy.
Be sure to post pics of the install.

Avalon Olympic insert, 3.1 cu ft firebox.

I would like to get a set of legs or pedestal for it just in case I decide to build a house in the country sometime and move it there.

As per my original post about this unit the Olympic is about the biggest that I can squeeze into my firebox.

I am super excited about getting this thing installed!

That's awesome. Congrats. You re going to love that wood heat.

That stove looks like it means business. Do you have a chimney and hearth installed already?

Sweet. You have some serious heat coming your way.

Looks just like our Rainier 90 here at the house. The only disappointment: Not quite deep enough to allow a true "North/South" placement of splits of typical 16" lengths. We have to place them at 30º Angles. Not a big deal, but I wish I had gone one step larger in stove size, so I could TRULY burn N/S. Would allow us to get more wood in the firebox, when loading for the night.

That said...........these stoves get the job done, and we LOVE the big door window!!

"We" chose the legs, instead of the Pedistal Base. Looks a bit more traditional that way. I dunno. The big square base option just looks sorta "Jetson's" to us.

I was first considering the Rainier, but the burn time of 10 hrs max and firebox capacity of only 1.8 cu ft. made me think bigger. I never would have bought a new Olympic insert, just not in the budget, then this insert popped up on CL around Chicago and I fixated on having it. In less than a week I had figured out it was the one I'd wanted and set about to pick it up this past Saturday. It was one of those seedy Las Vegas type affairs, after five hours of driving we were wed and happily returned home to Des Moines.

As for the setup I've just eradicated the old gas log and piping that occupied my firebox for years. In fact based on the gas valve hardware and the replacement gas line(s) it had been there a very long time.

The only remaining items I need is the chimney liner kit that will be ordered tomorrow. Once that's installed I can set the insert and install a block-off plate where the damper arrangement was before. The only thing that might be needed is to rework some of the original fire bricks if the unit does not sit far enough into the box, and there's a chance that will be the case, but I won't know that till I mark out where it sits and do some measuring. I'll be marking out the footprint of the new insert inside the firebox in about 10 minutes and I'll know more then.

Burn time hours are kind of unreliable. With a 3.1 cu ft fire box you can expect 8-10 hour burn times for the most part. The smaller 1.8 cu ft firebox probably would have given you 4-6 hour burn times on average.

Yeah, I've read several threads on here that suggest burn times are a bit optimistic. I would guess that under a particular set of circumstances you might be able to get the published times but in general not burn times that we'll realize.

That is one sweet insert!..It is on my list of possible replacements for my winter warm. Haven't seen one yet in person. Thanks for posting the photo! -piejam

Congratulations!

Over the past 20yrs I have owned at one time or another every stove that Avalon made. They all performed well for me. My favorite was the Olympic (I had an Olympic fireplace insert). Simple to operate and the larger firebox than the Rainer meant I had coals in the morning to start the fire going again. I think you'll really like the stove.
