Went into my local Home Depot store , they have stove chow pellets stored at verious locations around their property. Some are stored 100 yards from the store, in the front of the parking lot. They had an open skid at the front of the store where you go in with verious bags exposed , in weather what I'd call a slight drizzel, and there was a big hole's in some of the bags . And who is to say what could happen to the 10-15 tons they have stored 100 yards from the store. Price was nice at $197.00 , but is it worth the risk? If you can get pellets stored inside at $27.00 more a ton?

My thoughts is does every pellet manufacturer keep their pellets inside at all times? I would like to only get ones stored inside but around here in ohio i havent found anyone that stores all pellets inside. As for the Stove chow I got 2 tons at my local HD and with my 10% off coupon paid 177.00 a ton and I Bought gift cards at our local grocery store and got double points so I get a dollar of of 35 gallons of gas. Now add the 35.00 to the savings and I paid 159.00 per ton. For that price I will take my chances. Now with that said as soon as I get them home I store them inside. So far I have never had any problems with my pellets.

If you dont mind me asking? What HD did you go to? To find Stove Chow in Ohio.

And Pro Pellets are sold all over Ohio. They are stored inside at the Mill and on the truck that delivers them. At least to 2 Hearth shops I jave been to (One is a Forum member)

Pro Pellet is 100% indoor stored. Kinsman Stoves is 100% indoor stored and if the weather is bad I unload the truck inside a building. Do not buy pellets that were outside. It is giving the pellet industry a bad name when someone says they got pellets that were water damaged or burn bad.

If you can not handle a product that you manufacture correctly why the heck are you making it? Lets have a little pride in your product.

My home depot keeps them outside too, and a few months ago they had a pallet of all the bags that were ripped open and wet with the pellets clumped toghether from the dampness. There was a nice sign on it. Wood Pellets Half Price!! That is like going to a car dealer and seeing a car that was totalled from an accident with a sign Half Price !!!

So I told them they were worth Nothing and they looked at me like they did not even understand !!!! LOL

big box store managers and their subs are clueless. i was at lowes yesterday and the was a high eff washer with a sign on it "dropped, hole in tub, scrap only, $599" it was marked down from $799 and was useless. scrap value is about $20. goofy bastards.

Saw a pressure washer at TSC marked down to $469.95 from $499.95. No Hose, No Gun, No Nozzles. About a $100 worth of parts. lol What a deal!

I must have a weird Home Depot here. They keep the pellets inside.

So do mine. But they dont sell to the "Masses" like up in the New England area. Abkut 1 truckload of stock at any time (around 20 ton) Menards might have around 100 ton, but there still under cover.

Around here it is hit or miss as to where they keep them. however a good number of the ones exposed to the outside are apt to have tears in their outer coverings allowing water, ice, and snow to get to the micro perforated (if not actually damaged) bags.

That is a loose/loose situation. It is also fruitless to attempt explaining it to them, even when faced with puff bags it doesn't sink in.

I don't mind if they are transported or stored in the elements provided they are properly wrapped. Unfortunately that is far from being the case.

HD here will replace any bags you say were bad, don't even need to bring em back, just say 10 bags were wet or too much sawdust and they will replace them.

That is still a waste of your time.

I'd like to know what percentage of pellets available for purchase have spent their whole life under a roof.

So far Pro Pellets at Kinsman.

Otherwise I'm thinkin its gonna be hard to prove.

Not here to bash Home Depot, buttttttt ha ha, I was in the market for a ton of road salt, and I told the person , I guess in charge, or the rock salt , I wanted a ton of salt or 2000 lbs{their salt was in 50 40 lbs bags thisis what they said}and she said "well what do you want a ton or 2000 lbs"? and I had to tell her they were the same.

Pro Pellets are the only ones I have heard shipping in closed trailers. The others I have personally seen over the road have the heavy tarps covering them. Has to be close to a box trailer. Many mills store outside. Some are our favorite brands. If you go to some of the mills websites you'll see pictures of stacks outside. Not all pellet house's store indoors either. I have seen some outdoors. But usually covered with tarps.

The biggest enemy of a sealed pallet of pellets is the fork lift operator. Once the cover is damaged, Well all bets are off!

Hey Eric,
When you open your new warehouse in Western mass let me know so I can buy my pellets from you. I know you sell the best pellets at the best price and they are the driest.
Unfortunately I live in a real world not a dream world..

If everyone took a little more pride in what they did. And didnt half A$$ everything. Then you would be buying pellets from a guy like Eric. I have been to his shop and seen his storage. Top notch guy. Selling a good line of stoves and pellets.

Cant knock a guy for having pride. That makes me question the person knocking him. Why put him down for going out of the way, to ensure his customer gets a good product. In an economy where stove shops are falling to the wayside. Dealers should do everything they can.

Personally, I have found a shop that has an honest man, that charges an honest price, for an honest product. Not to many of them out there now.

I apologize for stepping out of line and defending Eric. But until you met him, you cant judge. A Very Good Dealer is hard to find. My dealer (Capell's) in Elyria Oh. Is selling or closing there doors by the New Year. I may be SOL if the new buyers dont honor my warranty. I thought they had a nice shop. But I guess when your time is up?????

Just saying. Good dealer. Inside storage. Good prices. Cant put a guy down for that. You said it best, about his pellets, prices, and storage.

Forgive me if I'm wrong, but aren't most pellets shipped via train freight then tractor trailer. Who's to say they weren't exposed during the ride from the train to the warehouse?? I wish we lived in a perfect world!

Never take pellets that were stored outside.

Eric

I'd be willing to bet most of us wouldn't have any pellets following this criteria.

Last summer I had 5 tons delivered, and I looked at the tops of each stack since they were wrapped tight in a white plastic cover, but under that white cover was more plastic, like a clear saran wrap material, and the outside tops were all coated with dirt and green algae from being stored outdoors in the rain and what have you. At first I thought " uh oh" these are going to be damp or something, but you know after seeing how well each pallet was wrapped I could see there was no way water was getting anywhere near the bags inside.

I used them, and they were nice and dry, and burned very hot and clean. You can store them outdoors if the bags are covered good and providing that the bags do not have any holes in them. I found several bags in my 5 tons that had small holes and all I did was slap a small piece of duct tape over the hole. But basically I just want to say you can keep them outdoors if they are covered from the rain.

Mine were all stacked out in the garage for over a year in high humidity and the pellets were not affected as far as I know. These pellets were Country Boy pellets from Southern Kentucky and I would rate them as good as the Somerset brand I used 3 years ago.

I will say however if you saw a stack outside in the rain uncovered, then I'd be leary about buying those. They should have had a tarp over them.

Uhh? Are you awake ? If so, can you tell me exactly where I knocked Eric ! Eric may well be the nicest guy on the forum but he needs to be enlightened to the rest of the world outside of his domain too.
Not everyone in every city/town/state has access to pellets that are guaranteed to have been covered from factory to consumer`s door . It would be nice but I don`t live in a perfect world and I doubt Eric does either . Welcome to the real world.

Eden wood pellets are also shipped in a covered trailer and I believe stored inside at the plant. I then put them inside but I also deliver in any conditions so I can't say they wont see weather unless you pick up.
Kinsman has the right model that other dealers should try and replicate if possible. It is hard for many dealers because pellets do take up a lot of room and many manufactures store outside and the further from the manufacture the higher the price. I know NEWP and Cubex do store pellets out side at the plant so I tell every customer if you have a bad bag give me a call and I will drop one off when I am in the area again its the best I can do.

I cannot imagine a large scale pellet plant being able to store all of the product inside. Crank up for the season and you are talking acres of space.
