well the dutchwest may have bit the dust, top damper was stuck so took off top, after freeing damper started vacuuming off inside top of stove
with top off looking back under stove pipe there is a block of fiber type material that now has two holes in it
checked believe this is fountain assembly checked online prices near $400.00 may be time for a newer different kind of stove

I assumed 2478 was the model number of the Dutchwest.

I have a 2461 in pieces. :)

All to common in those stoves. just doesnt seem like anyone that had one of those stoves has gotten it to last or get it to work. i had one heck of a time with that stove.

Pretty stove with pretty high maintenance and repair costs, especially the early models.

O.K. what stoves are people going with now, i am heating about 1300 sq. ft. i know all have different opinion but need to get one soon. dutchwest has been a good one but should not break down this quick

There's a loaded questions! :cheese:

What are your preferences?
Non-cat or Cat?
Steel?
Cast iron?
Soapstone?
What size is your wood cut to?

tnroadkill, I'd do some homework on the fountain assembly (part #30002100). Mine disintgrated when I was doing start up maintenance 2 days ago. I got prices from 461.00 to 176.00. They aren't that well constructed so be gentle with it. They're actually screwed together with #6 screws (can you imagine that?) My 2478 is just a shell now until I get the parts. Happy hunting.

Look at the Jotul line. The PE T-Series is well liked here as well.

I'm not sure building one would be a good idea. From my limited knowledge of these assemblies they're tuned to operate a specific way. Good design, bad material. I talked to a vc rep on the phone about the material these fountain assemblies where made of and they are adversely effected by humidity and gasket stability. Besides, 200.00 to 400.00 $ as opposed to 1200.00 to 2000.00 $, I guess the math speaks for itself. Just my thoughts.
