Tons of new owners, lots of experienced ones. E-Raise your e-hand if you think you might mess with the inlet for the secondaries? Discuss...

Too soon for me, haven't even put the first fire in it and I don't even know what the mod is supposed to do.

I just don't wanna over-fire the mother..... :-S
I will have to adjust my loading technique until I see how she behaves...

This is the last woodstove we are buyin dammit...well not the last....but for the next decade at least....

Never heard of anybody modifying the secondary air system on a 30.

Been a while since I've needed to whip this out but I'll show it off :coolsmirk:

Me think pen had a thread once on blocking the secondary air AFTER the load has finished outgassing or burned to coals, doing so extended the "burn time"...pen?

Danno - for the sake of clarity, you may want to be real, real specific about "whut you talkin' 'bout Willis?".

Oh yeah, I got that same setup on my Liberty, pen. Sweet!

I don't even get a teaspoon of soot from the chimney when I sweep it!

I don't know why they don't come from the factory like that.

Nope not me for that one. I let the stove run as it was designed since it does a great job.

I was thinking about being able to close off or adjust maybe the amount of air into the tube. I thought it was Pen that did that already, but I guess I was wrong. Don't have a link right now and too lazy to look. Besides NOS I'm open to any other cool mods.

I tried that nitrous setup but the neighbors kept bitching about chimney caps falling on their houses.

And don't forget the flames shooting out the chimney. Cooked an entire gaggle as it flew over in V formation.

Welp, here is my take: It has been posted that a piece of foil over the secondary inlet can assist in shutting down a runaway 30, but beyond that, I don't see why anybody would want to modify that intake. It is a highly integral part of the clean burn operation of the stove. You would have to convince me (beyond the runaway scenario) that ANY modification to this intake would have ANY positive effect and "how". Prepare for a rebuttal.

it would be nice if you had a whistle installed on the intake..that way you get an audible feedback when the stove goes into super burn mode.

Main reason is that I like to be in control. It's like modifying my car so that I can have the defroster setting on without having the AC compressor running.

I am not trying to sound like a butt head here, but the better analogy would be: So I could kill the spark to two cylinders while pumping that unburnt fuel out the tail pipe.

Well at least bring it with you maybe you'll change your mind after you see how the one I sent to Dennis looks on him. His is pink too! (actually they are all pink). :cheese:

In all seriousness, I'm with Jag's on this one. It would take a lot to prove to me that any mod to this thing could gain much of anything. If I load it right up I can go 14 hours between loads and still get a relight w/out paper and that's with the air set ~1/4 inch open and a stove top at 600+ for hours! On the other end, I can get the bad boy up to 850+ if I need it to put the heat out. What more could you honestly hope for? It's not like it's a blaze king!

you say this like its a "bad thing"...blowback from the tailpipe is the best defense against tailgaters....worked perfectly on my '73 Super Beetle.

Hmmm...73 super beetle with tailgators...My 73 Challenger doesn't seem to have that problem. ;-)

If ya just gotta play with something on the 30 get two flat magnets and put them over the two holes one behind each front leg in the front of the stove. This blocks off the air to that zipper" that sticks up in the front of the firebox. But don't do that and expect an E/W load to burn worth a damn.

"a stove top at 600+ for hours"

Ok, we've heard this before, but HOW MANY hours. Yes, I know there are variables involved.
I'd just like a reasonable guesstimate so I know what to look forward to.

If you need more than a couple hours at those temps you either need a bigger stove, a second stove, or a better placement. That's a lot of btu's!

Off the top of my head, I can't remember. I haven't run that thing like that since sometime in March and typically I don't pay to much attention after the first 15 minutes once I have the air set to "cruise."

As far as the zipper air, some guys hate it, but I like it. I think it helps me to burn the coals down a bit faster which is what I need in really cold temps.
