Get a hygrometer so you know whats going on.
I always dry clothes on the rack for humidy, and never use a steamer.
70 percent humidy in the house when its 80 degrees turns into problems if the temp in the house falls to.... say 65 degrees.
With a hygrometer, this correlation becomes obvious and gives you the info you need to make adjustments.

Feeling the Heat
Stove-top steamer filled all the time. Mine uses between 3 and 4 liters daily. I have one of those new fangled weather stations that monitors rel. humidity, and my house seems to be stuck between 45 and 50%. If the steamer goes dry, the rel humidity drops to around 30 to 35%.

I keep a soapstone steamer on my HearthStone Mansfield always, and full, unless we forget to fill it. Other than the humidity, the other nice thing about it is that my wife (covertly) makes deposits of different scented things in it also. Cinnamon sticks at the holidays, Eucalyptus or any spice/ scent she wants to try. I think it is better than CO producing candles, without the soot.

I will definitely start hanging the laundry in there instead of the basement. That is a nice tip.
Do any of you use steamers that have a variable output? Mine has a grate like top and I cannot restrict the steam output. I probably should have purchased the kettle type.
