I am considering adding a fireplace to my extra bedroom Lennox Ladera or BIS NOVA is the model I have been looking at. I want to put it on an exterior wall. The extra bedroom is below the master, it is a small bedroom but opens to the office and serves as a good corridor to the rest the house which is about 1700sf. The bedroom also has an exterior door which is perfect for wood hauling! I have a Quadrafire Pellet 1200 in the great room on the other end of the house.

The following questions have come up:

I am wondering if there is a second vent I can install to the master off the venting? Or would a simple floor vent above the wood stove be an easier fix?

Can I do this myself. I am a pretty good DIY guy, I can do a kitchen or a bathroom no problem. Done a few friends houses. I work in masonry and landscape construction. Plumbing HVAC are not my strongest skills however.

Buy online or local? (Local for me is 100+ miles to dealer I haven't even been there yet) I live in rural area so online makes sense. But if I need lots of advice and specialty parts they maybe good I've been there before and I thought prices were on high side!

I am a bit worried how the back of the fireplace is going to look from the exterior of my house I don't think I want to build the framing around the venting until next Summer. But I'd like to have the fireplace for this Winter I have about 3 cords of wood at a customers property to remove!

Have I chosen a good model? The basics I'm looking for are, zero clearance, flush with wall (nearly), blower, can take larger logs like 16"-18", and can be mounted off the floor I like the idea of not having to bend over to add wood.

Explain the following options: (1) gravity air distribution kit, (2) forced air kit (I have a good guess but don't know exactly how you'd use it), and (3) outside are kit connection. Any recommendations on them?

Thanks in advance for your advice and opinions!

I just installed a Ladera a few months back and am very happy with it. There are a few forum members who alos have the BIS Nova so hopefully they will chime in. Specific to your questions ...

1) this is ducting that runs directly from the top of the fireplace to an adjacent room or above. For the Ladera / NOVA I believe you have to run in parrallel meaning that you can not choose the run just the left GAD vent or right GAD vent. From what I've gathered most people are not happy with them but if my application would have allowed I would have done it.

2) the forced are kit is also ducting but with a blower. This kit connects directly to either the left side or right side of the unit with an in line blower to get heat distributed to other rooms etc. 50ft max I believe is the longest run you can have. Again, from what I gathered most people were not happy with the overall performance of this add on however if my application allowed I would have also done this or #1.

3) OAK is to draw outside air into the firebox. Mandatory in Canada from what I was told but optional in the U.S I believe. Many different opinions on OAK but from what I gathered for a FP it's a must have vs a stove. Others from the forum will hopefully comment.

I'm relatively new to wood burning and still learning.

Not sure what you mean by not building framing around the venting - do you plan to operate the FP without an exterior chase ???
