Its no big secret among the people I know I have a terrible case of OCD. Cutting firewood had become my latest obsession. My wife tells me last night I have to stop. She said next thing you know. I will be attaching a flashlight to my saw. Dragging the generator to the woods and plugging in work lights. I wish she wouldnt get me any ideas! Please tell me I am not alone!

As of right now your alone.:) I enjoy bucking and splitting too but I have a lot of other things that need doing. Right now I'm set for 2 seasons worth of firewood. The most I'm doing now is stacking this years wood onto the porch. Come March I will have a tree length delivery and I will do what you are doing now for about 2 weeks. I probably won't use the saw again til then unless something comes up. Hey, if u enjoy it split away. If you run out I have a couple cords of logs in the driveway. :)

I don't like doing it much, but it's a nessesary evil.

I've split by porch light. Worked until it was to dark to find all the tools laying around.
Attaching a light to the chain saw, that has potential. Especially here in Alaska.
Husqvarna & Stihl may want to patent it

Zap does it all the time :) How else could he have so much wood. :)

That is why I try to do my wood in teh summer... when it's fairly warm and light for nearly 24hrs.

You are not alone I have cut 20 full cord this year and only 6 cord is for me I try to cut asmuch as I can even in the summer time cutting campfire wood for the camp site I find it enjoyable and besides what's more fun then tearing stuff up with a chainsaw

You are in good company here with OCWD (obsessive compulsive wood disorder).

Only advice is don't worry too much about not having the biggest woodshed in the world......

cos someone on here will always post a picture of a bigger one....... ;-)

You could have a worse hobby!
Chasing an imaginary wood nymph is much better than chasing a real bar fly!

I enjoy the sawing and splitting, but not the loading of rounds on the trailer, or stacking splits. I will take huge amounts of wood when the getting is easy, but i also like knowing i have wood and wont have to touch any equipment for a year or two while im stocked up.

I enjoy the whole process of cutting wood from start to finish I like using my toys and what better way to do so I would have enough wood for three years if I cut jus for myself this year but the year ain't over yet and im not tired of cutting yet

I don't cut at night, but I have a couple good headlamps that let me load, haul, and stack at night. I also have on occasion set up the big worklight and split until 10pm...

So.... I think you're normal!!

I'd be tempted to direct all the enthusiasm into getting and storing as much wood as you possibly can - seasoned processed wood is quite a valuable commodity to some along about February. Wouldn't take too much of it to pay for some new toys and beer to boot.

Yep, your not alone. I myself am just starting to come to the realization of what burning firewood really intels. I'd rather do the stuff in the morning, but I also only work on wood at short times like 1 hr to 1 1/2 hr at a time. When winter rolls in, you'll be able to savor the joys of all that work.

Don't worry you're not alone, plus you're in good company here.

Good company here.....

I've have not cut under lights but I have used the splitter under lights. A splitter is not a noisy as a chainsaw. I guess if you live far enough away from your neighbors - a little saw running in the dark is cool, but I'd quit by 9 or 10 pm.

I am usually good for cutting and loading 3 pick up loads per day before muscle cramps get me and I give it a rest. (I work alone) I can usually knock 3 loads out in 3-4 hours and do something else (like mow grass) for the other part of the day.

Hurricane Irene and TS Lee have me fat with wood. I've got 4 more trees to get and I'm finding more each day. My wife says - I've got enough already for next year........ true, but I want to get all I can get and take some time off later!

I'm pretty sure you can get a headband w/light attached, or a helmet with same. Spelunkers use 'em.
Cheaper than the gennie and more portable. :cheese:

I don't cut or split in the dark. You have to draw the line somewhere!

Power equipment and darkness don't go together. Now beer and darkness...

Just don't forget about your Wife.

BTW I'm MICHAEL H also.

I could never forget about my wife! We just had out third baby. Little boy. Healthly and happy. That makes three so we are done. I am just getting a bit carried away as usual while she is on maternity leave. After that. My time to do things goes to not. Which is how it should be. But my OCD is classic. I think it is time to get a little medicated and start enjoying life. At least I always do things which are productive but in reality it is not easy to deal with.

MH -

you're not alone

someone here already said it. i love every part of the woodburning process. yeah, stacking is probably my least favorite but its kinda like doing the finishing touches after a whole lot of labor. and what's the reward? kicking back with the wife, stocking feet in front of the stove on a wicked cold winter night. zero heating bills (other than gas and bar oil)

oh yes....ONE thing i absolutely despise about cutting/splitting firewood: summer. heat and humidity and skeeters. but you gotta cut when its available.

OT

YOur def not alone.

I have a deal worked out with my neighbors I can split til 10pm. After that I stack. I have a pretty well lit area where I do most of my splitting. I have too much wood for my small property and still today I couldn't pass up a few fresh cut logs of locust. I'm not sure where I'll stack them, but I look forward to splitting them. We're all a little sick, here. It's pretty addictive.

Michael H, as for your OCD, that is a tough challenge for all parties. I wish you well in your endeavor to overcome it, and make it more manageable. All anxiety disorders are challenging and can be very difficult for those around you. I don't know where you're at with your faith, but I encourage you to invite God into your struggle with it. Many people very close to me struggle with anxiety and prayer tends to be very helpful. I hope I didn't cross the line with this.

There is nothing wrong with cutting while you can cut. The wood will only get better with time and you sure aren't going to have more free time in the future as the baby gets older. When you're 18 years ahead you can stop cutting until the baby goes to college. No, you'd better be 20 years ahead so that in 18 years when you have free time, you'll still be able to burn seasoned wood.
