I have a lp gas log black pipe thats coming through my fireplace that I intend to seal once I remove it so I can install a wood stove. I thought I was going to install fire caulking and then mortar over the hole about 2 inches deep in the hole but have recently found out that the fire caulking is only rated for 300 to 400 degrees so I am needing some advice on what to put into that hole. Mortar mix is fireproofing? right? so should I just use mortar or cement rather than the caulking or do they make something especially for this application that I am not aware of?

Mortar should work. It's non-combustible.

Thanks BG. Guess my second question would be Is there a special mortar mix for this situation? Like the mortar between flue tiles or is that the same as standard mortar mix?

You want a furnace cement. not a mortar mix. you can get it at home depot or lowes.

Thanks for the info. now I can cram a hole with stuff and feel good about it. :cheese:

I got one of those things to fill too. Figured I would force some steel wool into the very bottom of the hole and then cover it with the furnace cement, that way it's not globbing through on the other side...which is in a crawl space that I'd rather not venture in to again if I don't have to....
