Just looking ahead to when I have to do do a full cleaning on my Englander .
I direct this to those who have already experienced this task.
Is it imperative that I order the proprietary combustion fan and burn pot gaskets from Englander or is a comparable material available elsewhere that I could make my own?
Thanks.

I found Mr. Gasket 9614 at a car parts store. A little bit tough to cut. About $15.00 a sheet. I figure to get 2 gaskets from 1 sheet. Plus 2 exhaust connector gaskets. I found some other hi heat gasket at NAPA, But I don't get the part number for it.

Ultimately I am looking for a reusable material that won't stick or rip. Still looking for that. I wonder if you brush or spray never-seez on it, would make these's reusable?

Gio, here is a place that sells sheets of gasket material: http://www.sealsales.com/sheet/csheet.shtml

Most auto supply or HVAC suppliers are likely to have something comparable.

As always match up the thicknesses and temperature specs.

I've found that cutting gasket material can be a pain if the blade or the pair of scissors you are using isn't very sharp.

The 1/16th mat`l listed might be good. A 60" square sheet @ $46 would last a long time. Not that I want to be cheap over the gaskets from Englander but the stuff that comes on the stove seems to disintegrate when disturbed and I`d like something more durable if possible.
Thanks.

Most fiber based gasket material will tear because of the metal edges slicing and catching the fibers when the seal is disturbed. A small thin blade behind the gasket after the nuts have been loosened can help a bit. Be careful if using a vacuum as that also is good at destroying them if the nozzle gets too close.

But it really is catch as catch can on reusing a gasket.

Gio,

I found the Napa number.
FPG 2499 (12" x 28" x 1/16") Sheet

If you are looking for the exact material as the stock gaskets. Do a google for lytherm. It is supposed to help dampen noise levels too!

Noise dampening not a consideration on the burnpot but on the combustion and distribution fans it would be worth considering.
Thanks for the reminder on this.

OK, did a quick search on the Lytherm gaskets (spun silica)
Found this:

$18 per sq ft.
"We are selling it by the square foot from a 2' wide roll. If you buy one item here you will get 12" x 12" x 1.8" thick and you can cut it to fit your needs with a razor knife or scissors. This raw material is very hard to find but we now have a source so you can cut gaskets for those that are not available any more. If you want to order sizes over 12" just order as many square feet as you want and we will cut it off 24" width roll.

This material is commonly used on pellet stoves for use between combustion motor and convection blower housing and exhaust duct or similar high temperature locations.

This material is for use in hot areas and stands temperatures over 1,000 degrees due to its ceramic fiber material. It is perfect for any compression fitting sealant for long lasting durability. "

After the helpful replies and a little research on my own I`m just gonna order a set from Englander and have them on hand. I see no significant benefits or advantages making my own not to mention having to cut them out.

Gio,

You might ask if they are selling reuseable gaskets. I know that Harman and Quadrafire sell some gaskets that are reuseable.

Good thought but I don`t see em listed on their parts availability list.
I guess they use those Lytherm gaskets for good reason but they sure are flimsy.

this info is from our site, it is in stock,
i can only offer you a 10% discount however... ok to call me for a discount if you'd like

the blower gasket we probably have, as they are all pretty common( and might be cheaper than raw material...), but i'm not sure what the firepot gasket is made of, or the dimensions

Tin snips, or even better are aviation snips.

Have you tried the very old trick of laying a piece of gasket material over the flange and then tapping around the edges and inside diameter with a ball peen hammer? I haven't tried it on this kind of gasket but it sure works great for normal gaskets.

Hey folks, I have no trouble making my gaskets as I use a very sharp hobby knife and sharp scissors.

I have however been in the position where I wasn't using my tools.

My gasket ripped the first time I tried removing it. However, half stayed on each piece, so I just keep reusing it that way as they dont stick to each other. Doesn't leak any either. Hey, maybe that's you're answer, use two gaskets as they may not stick together?

Mike -

Not for nothin but, I just bought a COMPLETE gasket kit from Englander for like $55ish.

OEM, I even had extra material left over for the hopper, door, cobustion blower.
