Greetings, I'm a newbie but have been reading this website for the last couple years and really enjoy the good information provided. Have a three year old Harman XXV stand alone stove in our living room and looking for a used pellet insert for supplemental heat in a small lower level floor fireplace. Considering a used Whitfield Quest WP4 insert for $500 (seller is still looking to verify age of stove) or a used Whitfield Advantage Plus w/ digital controls insert for $800.00 which seller says is from 1996 or 1997. Any suggestions about what stove would be considered to be the better purchase or suggestions for other used insert models to consider for purchase or models that we should steer away from?? Thanks for your consideration.

Take it from me, get the advantage III, it's a much better stove. This stove is easy to work on. I feel that the Advantage stove were the best pellet stoves made! As you can tell I Love Whitfield Stoves.

Thanks, Mr. Whitfield!! I appreciate your response. I think they might be raising the price on the Whitfield Advantage insert because other buyers are interested in the stove - maybe to $1000. Could you please inform us of your opinion on the Whitfield Quest insert WP-4 model as to if that is a decent stove for the price of $500?? It's a bit more budget friendly but if spending more to get the used Advantage insert stove is a better buy, we can do that. Appreciate your wisdom :)

Terpdog,

Ive actually owned both stoves although the Quest was a free standing model.

The Quest was the first pellet stove I ever owned. For the initial install, pellets would build up in the burn pot. The stove never was capable of providing enough combustion air. After 10 years or so using this stove, I ended up giving it away. I would not recommend buying this stove.

The Advantage Plus insert I had was a very good stove. I had to replace the auger motor once but the stove performed great. It had enough combusion air. I ended up selling the stove for $400.

I believe Whitfield made some very good stoves, especially the Advantage II,III's and Plus models.

Thanks, Cincinnati Kid!! I appreciate your response; it was very helpful. I think we will heed to the wisdom of your experience and advice as well as Mr. Whitfield's advice and go for the Advantage insert. Hopefully, we can get it for a fair price. This is a fantastic website offering very good, insightful advice. Thanks!!

I think your making the right choice. Pay a little more and get a much better stove. You won't be sorry. If you have any problems just PM and I will do all I can to help you with your problem.

Thanks so much. That makes sense and gives me confidence about my purchase. By the way, would you have any advice as to how much we should spend on the used Advantage insert?? I'm going to check out the stove later this week. Seller has said that stove is in good working order, has the digital control and has received regular maintenance. They aren't the original owners of the stove; came with the house they bought. They do have the manual and have had it professionally cleaned since they've had the stove and said the previous owner maintained it well. Manual said 1996 or 1997 give or take time frame. I just want to ensure that we pay a fair price for the stove and don't overpay for the stove. I appreciate your taking the time to assist. Thanks!!

I have a Quest FS and have had it for over 10 years. So, does a friend. Neither of us has ever had a problem, except for the occasional igniter. No experience with the insert version. That said, I would get the Advantage. Better stove, easier maintenance.

Thanks, Stellep. I appreciate your input. Not sure if that Advantage insert stove is still available but I'm still looking into it as it seems that's the better purchase. There are some other used brands available such as Quadrafire and Breckwell, too, but not that familiar with those brands. There's a local store around that sells used units as well, including Whitfields. Going for the Whitfield if I find the right model and price. Thanks for your advice.
