I'm assuming it's been sitting in a garage or barn or basement that gets a good amount of humidity. Doesn't take long for cast iron to show surface rust. The top of the stove also looks like it suffered from having a pot of water boil over by the way the rust marks are.

For a price that is approaching a grand that thing is pretty rough looking. If they let the outside of it deteriorate to that type of condition just imagine how little care was given during it's operation. Buyer beware for sure...

They're located in Buzzards Bay (Cape Cod) - maybe it was used as a mooring....???

Burn driftwood?

good reason to get enamel. Poor neglected Jotul

They should go ahead and repaint it if they are expecting that kind of price for it. When you see what Coaly has done with those old Fisher stoves you can see how old rusty stoves can be made beautiful again, but those folks need to recognize that by leaving it outside or whatever they did with that, they kinda removed some of the value?!

They obviously don't give a rip about their stove and I con only imagine how they treated it when it was running. There is no way I would buy that thing at the price they are asking with it looking like that

im waiting for a warranty call about this one!

I'd rather deal with some surface rust than chipped enamel.

From the picture it looks like it is being stored in a cellar. A damp cellar would create that look. Also looks over fired. To get what they are asking some cleaning is needed.

You don't just see this attitude with stoves, it's with just about everything up for sale on CL (and about everything in general). People don't want to put any effort into doing anything or making anything look a little bit better. There is a failure to understand that you can get more from what you are peddling if you just put a little effort into making it nice. It's harder for people to resist something that's outstandingly clean versus one that's just dumped into a garage and then shown as it is.

The 'non-maintenance' attitude runs rampant in this country....cars, homes, everything now is really treated as disposable and it shows in how people care for everything. If you trash it just move on to another one.

Sorry...hope this doesn't offend some but I have a real problem with the whole idea that we don't take care of stuff.

What if they wanted to unload it, and, you could get it for a really great price, as it does say best offer. With a little labor, you might have a good stove.

I wouldn't touch it at that price. Too much obvious disregard for the stove. It looks like it sat on someone's porch out in the rain. If they ran it with equal disdain, then it could be a problem stove.

Just like with a used car, I prefer to buy something that shows obvious care and pride of ownership.

+1 I've looked at enamel stoves that were left outside or in other damp conditions and they started to rust underneath the enamel staining the enamel and making it crack and flake--which of course is non-repairable. Spray paint on the other hand is cheap......

Wonder how many times the ash pan door was used to start the fire on this stove?

Like someone else said, I wonder if they were burning driftwood in it. If so, I'd hate to see what the inside looks like......

You have no idea how many chipped enameled stoves are out there. Including Jotuls. I'm shocked when I come across a used enamel stove that isn't chipped.
