Brick Oven Started!!!

Started my brick oven this summer i set up an easy up over the site with a light in it cause i usually don't get home till late, its taking some time but the fun part is about to begin this week i hope to begin mortaring together the actual oven itself. I'm open to any suggestions or questions or whatever. here's some pics cause without pics it didn't happen,,, also including one of a tipi a friend gave to us ,,,what an awesome space we had a little fire in it the other night and it was great,,, ill try and get a pic of it glowing from the outside next time i do it.

Bob I to wanted to build one of these. Where did you get the plans? Is the fire box a kit you purchased?

I'll be tearing the deck off the back of my house this fall and pouring a 20x40 patio. The oven is the first thing on my list of things to do next spring. Looks like fun. Keep us posted.

Someday I'd like to build one. You can cook more than just pizzas. Roasts, breads, desserts- such as apple crisp and blueberry buckle.

I'd be curious what your material cost will be in the end, and what you are going to use to insulate and clad the outside. If I make one, it will probably have a slate roof built over the top somehow.

I want to fill the neighborhood with the odor of baked creations, I'll offer some to my neighbors, of course....

The plans are allen scotts, he is sorta the bread Guru im using his book " the bread Builders" and i also bought his plans which are a little more detailed; although i think i could have done it just from the book. There's no kit everything so far is from scratch. I am thinking about a metal roof over mine but I'm also thinking about perhaps a little building around it so i can use it all winter, something with a little counter top, sink, fridge perhaps. I dunno that's still in planing phase. Ill probably try it this year and if i want something around it i have all winter to come up with ideas. Following allens plans the oven itself will be covered with foil then clad with 3 inches of concrete then 4-6 inches of vermiculite but no worries i will keep posting pics from here on out.
 
Update ...

heres some new pics ,,, outer hearth is bluestone, and i just moartered in the first arch bricks!!! dunno what im gonna do about the EZ UP when the hurricane gets here

looking good! i'm gonna have ot look up allen scotts now. nice big chunk of blue stone - looks great.
 
That looks good so far! I used to work at a place that made high tech ceramics and we used oil/gas fired kilns to fire the porcelain.. Part of my job as maintenance man was rebuilding/repairing the kilns.. We used a similar but larger form to place the arch bricks.. I assume you're using taper bricks and if recall we used no mortar between them (it's been so long I am not sure) as they tend to seal themselves once the form was lowered.. I remember the bricks being very heavy and about 10" tall.. These kilns regularly withstood close to 3000 degrees! Good luck and thanx for the pics!

they are not tapered bricks, they are moartered together with heatstop 50 ,,, pretty pricey stuff!! 60+ bucks for 50 pounds but its good to at least 2500 deg so that will be more than enough. im letting the motar dry before i remove the form, i did the first last night and took it out today no probs! i did the second arch tonight, one more to go hopefully before the weather hits tomarra night. i also took the Tipi down cause of the storm, thats a drag but there calling for 60 + MPH wind. i dont wanna test my luck
 
Forno Bravo is a good site, yet they are much more focused on pizza ovens rather than bread ovens. a bread oven needs to be more massive because you take the fire out before you do any cooking. where in a pizza oven the fire stays in the whole time.
 
Update !!! sorry its been so long i have some new pics to share... i have been going all summer, keep in mind its my first ever brick laying job and i did 95% at night with those two lights and a head lamp.

Thaaat's pretty cool... I should try something like that... I've done everything else it seems, computer programming, engine/tranny swaps, driving race cars, speed skating, rough carpentry, electrical, plumbing... why the heck not masonry? :)

It seems kinda like building with legos, just way cooler ;)
 
phatfarmerbob, yer doin a great job!....I do a lot of stone masonry as a hobby/side job and I plan on doing almost the exact same thing here in my backyard next summer, only I plan on casing my oven in stone and making a stone flue on the top of it.....where did you get your high-temp mortar, and also where did you get the design for your oven?...keep those pics coming, looks great!...nothin like wood-fired bread and pizza....they are fantastic!!

Thanks my friend....I will look into that book this winter and be ready to do my project next spring....now you REALLY got me wanting this wood-fired oven...lol!
 
I would LOVE one of these is our backyard! I enjoy baking homemade bread. Bet I'd have the neighbors hanging around for samples. Right now I'm playing around with a chiminea.
 
Man that is really Mega Cool! Kudos! I'll bet my wife would love one of those. Maybe in my next life when I get some time.

I spent three years trying to start this thing, i read the bread builders cover to cover many times in that three years, i think the wait was worth it, somehow it made the project more rewarding once i finally got started!
