I have been running a BKK Parlor with good results since last year. Manufacture flaw on 40 of the stoves resulted in paint peeling which the manufacture admitted was due to their error. I ended up hiring my attorney to start legal action.

After a year of BS with the seller they have agreed to a full refund and will take my stove away, but will not replace.. Problem is my old stove is gone and it is winter here in Fairbanks and the stove is running.

I cannot just have it removed with 6 cords of seasoned wood in the yard, and oil running at $3.95/gal.

Any recommendations on another similar size stove, EPA rated, 8†flue and thermostatically controlled.

I'm afraid that is the only catalytic, thermostatic, 8" stove on the market. There is the Kuma Sequoia, though without the thermostatic damper. Or there is the new Woodstock Progress Hybrid stove that may ship out to AK by November.

Paint is cosmetic and though peeling should not happen, it seems remediable with a repaint. Was that not considered an option?

I would have been happy with a sand blast-repaint job. They kept saying they were going to do that for several months during the summer but just kept playing games with me and never showed.

Two week ago I told them I had to start the stove for the winter so it is too late to take the stove away.. Several people here were in same situation and had their stoves redone which was basically just a spray over done by a night time flunky.. Not acceptable for a manufacture flaw and paying $4000 for a stove..

Manufacture VP admitted to the paint flaw problem....

Sucks that you couldn't come to a deal with BK that was good for the both of you.

I'm the type of guy who would've taken the stove outside in the summer months, cleaned it and resprayed it myself. I don't like being bothered waiting on other people so for a cosmetic issue I would've handled it myself.

Unfortunately I think you'll have a hard time finding another stove that performs the way the King does for you. Maybe a Hearthstone Equinox http://www.hearthstonestoves.com/wood-stoves/stove-details?product_id=1 or one of the Buck stoves.

Boy this is a toughy. I'm more like the above poster and pretty much feel most warranties aren't worth the paper their written on. However 4K is pretty much top shelf price for a stove and to put it in prespective if you had just bought a Cadillac and the paint peeled off wouldn't anyone demand the dealer repaint or replace. You wouldn't just pull it in the garage and start sanding now would you? Especially when the paint doesn't peel off a Cobalt. So I kinda see where he is coming from.

Well in Fairbanks stuff is expensive.. Shipping a 500 pound stove here is spendy..But ya you should get a quality product for what you pay for. It is not uncommon that distributors send their junk up here. But I am not going to let Blaze King get away with this especially after they admitted their flaw in panting and I know several others that have the same problem here..

The VP of Blaze King just joined the forum, BKVP. From his introduction, he is seeking logical concerns and certainly appreciates compliments. If i were you I would send a private message to him explaining your situation. He has made himself available for these purposes. Keep us informed.....

Hearthstone Equinox is a major stove .... 3500 sf 130,000 btu soapstone. Similar pricing, 8" flue.
No thermostatic control though.

If the stove performed well, I too would just repaint it myself. No stove out there has the same setup as the BKK. The closest, I think, is the Buck 91 with 4.4 cu ft firebox, cat, and 8" pipe. I do not think you will get the same burn times, though.

There is no equal to that BK King. There is a reason they dominate in AK. I suspect that there are two sides to this story but a bad dealer can really cause trouble.

Why not buy another BK from a better dealer? Fairbanks isn't a small town and there are surely more dealers. Unless, that is, you have sworn off BKs forever. Is that the case?

No other stove makers use thermostats. It is a peave of mine. Very few use cat converters and almost none of them make large stoves with cat converters. You can have a small cat stove without a stat or you can get a larger non-cat.

Have you considered the wood furnace route? Without details about your home we don't know what size of stove you need. The BK King with its low output can be put in a mobile home and do fine. Before anybody suggests alternative stoves we need to know what you're heating.

I think Vermont Castings made one of the original thermostatic-dampered stoves. They still use it, which brings up one possibility - The Defiant 2 in 1. Trouble is that we don't have a multi-year track record for it. It's a world more handsome than the BKK.

You must be referring to Chris Neufeld the VP of Blaze King, he has been involved in my situation also since last January. He actually admitted to 40 of the Blaze Kings with a paint-primer defect. Last time we talked he actually was in Fairbanks, his words to resolve my stove problem was nothing but more lip service. Over 20 phone contacts and 3 in-person visits with the retailer has not resolved my issue.

I like the stove so I guess I am going to just eat my losses and hire a body shop to come take it away have it sandblasted and professional painted next summer. Cannot do it now, the stove is in action and burning fuel oil is not an option at almost $4/gal.. I got a few estimates between $1500-$2000.

I sure do miss my old Earth Stove, wish I could get it back…..

How large an area is peeling and in what location? Can you post a picture or two of the issue? It may not need sandblasting to get to bare metal.

That sounds like a hell of a rip off even with the Alaska mark-up. I'm getting a stove sent out for sandblasting and it's costing me $100. High temp black paint will run about $20 per can. Stop being angry and think about this for a minute.

Yeah, but they have to import the sand, grain by grain to Fairbanks. :)

Heck, I'd be buying a harbor freight sandblaster and giving it a go - and asking BK if they'd send a couple hundred to clear the deck.....

It does suck, but it is a somewhat typical problem. I had paint peel pretty badly inside my Lennox Gas fireplace......the buff paint that makes it look like firebrick. So far I've left it.

I sure would consider the route that Craig suggested. Ask the folks at BK how much they would be willing to put towards a new paint job, and yank the sucker out on a Sat. and have it cleaned and painted and reinstalled Sun. morning. Just throwing it out there.

I would also be ticked off in your situation, but the fact is you have a stove that works for you and there is not another on the market that has the same features. Get-R-Done.

John, there are a couple of threads going about the Woodstock Progress and lots of pictures. I posted more pictures and a link to a nice video we took last weekend. The pictures I posted got move to The Perfect Picture part of this forum. Have a look.

There is not yet but will be a thermostat control on the Progress. It is a new stove just being introduced and it can crank up to 80,000 btu. That thing throws some serious heat. It is heavy at over 600 lbs but that means the soapstone will help even out the temperature and hold the temperature longer. My wife and I also put a deposit on the new stove so we are anxious to get it.

I'm eager to hear the shipping costs on a Progress to Alaska.

I'd stick with the BK. Especially for Alaska. Unless there is something else wrong with the stove other than some peeling paint. Just be thankful you didn't buy an enameled Vermont Castings from a few years back...

They do realize you're painting a wood stove and not a car right? It's not like they have body work to do, you can probably strip it with a chemical stripper if you don't have a way to sand or media blast it. I'd try to get BK to toss me a few bucks to cover the supply's and some for my time and call it a day.

Is the stove located in a family/living room or a basement? If it's an unfinished basement you may not even have to move the stove out depending on where the issues are.

I'm not the kind that over-reacts to this kind of stuff, but silica dust in a well known carcinogen. I don't think I would recommend doing this in the confines of my home. Just say'in.

My thinking was if the area isn't large it could be knocked down with a scuff pad or some sandpaper by hand. If the whole stove needs to be blasted obviously that wouldn't work.

In my post when I mentioned "sand" I was thinking by hand, after reading it again I realize that flowed into the media blasting looking like sand or media blasting.
