Greetings fellow pellet aficionados! I've been reading your great website for about 6 months, but since I don't have a pellet stove, I really haven't had much to say.

Well, all that will be changing shortly...

I've done my homework, and I fell in love with the Avalon Astoria. At first I searched craigslist, but no one was selling them (I'm taking that as a good sign!). Then I called some dealers to see what the price was for a new one, and found a shop selling one for $2790. When I got to his shop and saw the unit, I noticed that the control panel looked a little different from what I expected. I asked him to run the serial number and it came back as an 2005 model. I inspected the stove, and it clearly has never been used, but apparently has been sitting in warehouses & a display room for 6 years.

I do not see any signs of rust or abuse on the unit, but should I be concerned about the history of this stove?

As a possible 2nd choice, I looked at the St. Croix Hastings. Aside from it's meager 45 lb hopper, can anyone vouch for this stove? This stove as a very interesting "versa grate" system that moves the firepot around a little bit to sift the ashes out. I was told this reduces the daily maintenance to a much longer period.

I look forward to your feedback!

As long as the warranty is valid from purchase date forward I wouldn't have a problem with it.

It will be nice to have MacGuyver on the forum! Welcome.

Hello MacGuyver

Welcome to the forum.

I luv my Avalon Astoria that I had for 2 seasons! Last year it saved me about a $1000.00 in oil! The oil truck only delivers about 200 gallons once a year now for the hot water in the summer time when the price is lower!!

I have all the TSBs and manuals if you need any.

There is not many differences between the 2005 model and the current one.
The Fault light on the control board now says maintenance required and I believe has a little more info to solve an issue.

Which store has the 2005 Astoria?

Another difference with the 2005 is that the heat and convection controls are manual knobs. That was my 1st hint to it's age. I just hope I don't find that things are ceased with age and inactivity.

Smoke: I just sent an email to Travis Industries asking about the warranty question. I'm pretty sure it's from date of sale, but it's best to ask.
Don: It's good to know you have all the manuals and some good experiences with the Avalon. I'm impressed with your quadruple heating backup systems in your sig file... clearly a man who hates the cold. I just sent you a PM with the store that has the 2005 Astoria. It was the only one they had, and I don't think he sold many.

Can anyone comment on the St. Croix Hastings? The forums contain lots of posts for problems, but that could just mean that more people have them. If any of you have one, I'd love to hear from you.

Hello

Maybe you can get an updated control board with a good deal on this stove. Don't forget the dealer pays alot less for the control board than you would pay later!!!!

Just an idea but the dealer may be willing to go the extra mile to get the stove out the door!!

Here is part of the Control Board Update TSB that shows that stove can be updated and exactly how to update it!

This control board is compatible with all large and small pellet heaters manufactured from 1997. Circuitry on the
board allows it to be programmed for either the large or small pellet heaters (these heaters use different voltage
settings). See “Configuring the Control Board“ for details. It also includes a diagnostic feature that allows the end
user to diagnose common problems without having to inspect the wiring or components. The indicator lights on
the control board will display a maintenance code after a problem has been detected. See

If you decide the older controls are ok, lowball an offer citing the age of the unit.

I had an '05 model I bought from a dealer as a "demonstrator" model, and had been sitting in his warehouse for a couple of years.

IMO, it's a great stove, and would be my pick over the hastings. It will will burn up to 50/50 mix of pellets/corn too. Travis Ind. makes a very good stove, and the 115lb. hopper is SO great....fill it once, and forget about it for 2-3 days. It is also VERY easy to work on, and I never had to replace anything while I had it.

As long as Travis, or the dealer will honor the warranty from the date of sale, I'd do like smoke show suggests above....offer less (Hint: I got my '05 unit in '08 for $1500).

Here's some pics of mine ( I did some painting to dress it up:

I have a St. Croix Afton Bay, which I think is similar to the Hastings, internally. It's been a good stove, easy to clean, easy to service, good heat, not fussy on pellets.
Only drawback, for me, is that it's a bit noisy, but may not be noisier than other brands…YMMV

If you're 2000 ft above sea level or more make sure it has the airwash kit in it. Other than that it will be a great stove. I sold them for years and they were solid performers. Little to no warranty work and heated really well.

They're great stoves. I sold Travis products for 8 years (the store I worked at sold them for 20). I burned one in my house for several years. But they changed the airwash in 2004/2005 and at higher altitude many of them faulted frequently because too much air was drawn in through the air wash and not enough under the burn pot. They issued a kit that blocked small portions of the air wash to balance the air flow. I had to put a bunch of them in but it only took about 10 minutes and fixed the issue every time.

Is this what you are refering to from 8/20/2007?
Airwash Upgrade for Leyden Pellet Stoves

The Lopi Leyden pellet stove has now been upgraded with a new airwash
assembly. The upgrade will improve the performance and airflow in the
stove.

We are also making this improved airwash assembly available in the form
of a retrofit kit. If you have a Lopi Leyden pellet stove with a serial
number less than 2105-001069, you might consider installing this
kit to improve the performance of the airwash. If the serial number of
the stove is greater than the number listed above, then the
improvements are already built into the stove. The kit will include
airwash sliders and baffles along with the instructions on how to
install the new parts.

The part number to order the Lopi Leyden pellet stove airwash kit is
250-00826,and the kit is available at no charge to you, although
shipping charges still apply. We hope this change will help you service
existing customers and find new ones in the future.

Routine Door Maintenance & Adjustment
Field Tune-Up Kit For
Sluggish Burning Large Pellet Stoves & Inserts
Convection Air Deflector Retrofit
I want to be sure you all are aware of this door adjustment procedure and
the field tune-up kit for Astoria pellet stoves and Astoria Bay pellet inserts.
Some dealers have asked for advice on how to service sluggish burning large
pellet units. We developed this service bulletin and field tune-up kit to help
them. You will want to read this as it may help you handle service calls on large
pellet units, now or in the future.
The attached service bulletin for large pellet stoves & inserts explains how
to determine if the door seal is tight enough for normal performance. The door
can shift position, and door gaskets can shrink and wear thinner with use.
These factors cause air leaks around the door which dilute the air velocity coming
through the burn pot, resulting in degraded combustion performance. Follow
the attached instructions and adjust the door as necessary to tighten the
seal to improve combustion. Proper door adjustment is the single most important
step in proper pellet stove maintenance.
We also want you to know about several field upgrades now available that
will help improve stove performance. If an Astoria pellet stove or an Astoria
Bay pellet insert shows signs of sluggish burning (pellets build up and the fire
frequently goes out) consider installing the following upgrades as well as adjusting
the door.
The Large Pellet Tune-Up Kit, SKU# 93007342, provides several easy-toinstall
parts which will restrict air flow through the air wash on the door. Also included
is adhesive-back foam tape to help seal the hopper lid. Installation of
these parts has the effect of increasing the velocity of air flowing through the
burn pot to create a more vigorous flame. Please note: The air wash restrictor
parts will not fit Astoria stoves before serial number 2303-927118 or Astoria Bay
Inserts before serial number 2304-07021. An easy-to-install sheet metal strip,
included with the tune-up kit, concentrates convection air flow for a hotter air
stream. There is no charge for this upgrade kit, and the standard labor allowance
applies to its installation.

I have the insert version of the Avalon Astoria and love it.. The only issue I had with it was a bad sensor and a dealer who refused to believe the sensor was indeed bad and replaced a bunch of other stuff before he finally did the sensor.. Heats almost my entire home, FROM THE SECOND FLOOR! Great price and I agree that if you can upgrade the control board, do it! :)

I like the Hastings. The Verrsa Grate allows you to burn pellets that will choke other stoves. Extremly efficient. The reason the Hastings only has a 45 pound hopper is that it does not have a steel hopper hanging off the back of the stove like most cast iron units. You are looking at a steel bay stove from Avalon. Why nott look at the St Croix Afton Bay?

Please tell me. What sensor went bad?

This is my third season with my Astoria and while i regret paying such a bloated price for it and not doing more research before i bought it, I am happy with it. I have had a few minor issues with it but overall a good stove. Much easier to maintain and clean compared to my back up englander. My house has alot of walls so its very difficult to move the air. as a result I have one very hot room and 4 cold rooms. All the fans in the world can't move the air enough. My suggestion is to spend time deciding where to locate it for maximum coverage.
