Apple??

Got a old apple tree - seems like a softer wood but maybe cause its wet - is it good burning?? Will also search the forum
 
apple is usually regarded for high btus.
 
When dry it's very nice. Good heat and aroma.
 
Good for heat, but even better for cooking/smoking. If you do any outdoor cooking save it for that.
 
Excellent stuff in many ways.

If it's been standing dead long, it can be a real bear to split. Worth it, though. IMHO.
 
I cut down an old apple tree a few years back....as they said above good btu's , hard to split after setting for a year or two and chunked up makes excellent pieces for smoking fish/meats. So I concur it can be good wood.
 
Apple is good. So is pear, cherry, peach and maple.
 
Apple trees tend to be hard to split because there are very few straight, unbranched sections of the trunk or branches. I am not sure if a straight section would split well because I have never found one. Nice firewood.
 
I tend to find apple to be one of the harder woods -- especially when it is standing dead. Definitely a desirable wood for burning due to the high BTU, but it can be twisted and lots of branches which can make delimbing, bucking and splitting not as much fun as some other tree species. As mentioned it's good for firewood, but even better when used to smoke some pork.

It's also nice for yardbirds. I love doing pulled pork with hickory/mesquite as the meat can take a stronger smoke. Fruitwoods like apple, pear, etc...are good for a smoked chicken-the other stuff is too much and will impart a bitter taste. That reminds me, there is an old apple tree down at my dad's house...so much wood, so little time...

We cut down a large McIntosh this year and I my concern with using it for smokin was all the pesticides used over the years. Would it still be safe for smokin??
The tree was at least 30yrs old...
 
I would think all the pesticides would simply wash off when it rains. No doubt those trees have seen much rain too!

+1 . . . if folks even used pesticides on them . . . I have several apple trees in my yard and I have no doubt that pesticides have most likely never been used on them . . . and I know for a fact not used in at least 15 years.
 
Pesticides? Well if apples are ok to eat then I'm guessing the wood is ok to smoke with. Apple is great fuel, can be a twisty mess to split though.
