Had a chance to fire up the Profab gassifier this weekend. Temps here in Maine are in the 50's , so I have not had a chance to give it a true test yet. However. It brought the 115 gallons of water up to 180 in about 4 hours and the gassifying process looks great. Obviously, the amout of wood I am burning is minimal because of the temps.

By next week we should be in the 30's and I'm anxious to monitor it's progress. I do like the quick turn around in bringing it back up to temperature. Previous units (non-gassifiers and gassifiers) took much longer because they contained approx. 400 gallons of water.

Not to rain on your parade, but 4 hours to heat only 115 gallons sounds like a long time. I can heat 500 gallons from 130 to 190 in about 5 hours.

Thats what I was thinking. i brought 820 gals up from 45 degrees to 180 in about 12 hours. Plus it was heating the house that had gotten down to 55 degrees inside. With outside temps about -10.

Usually i can bring tank from 110 to 165 in 3 1/2 hours. takes about 4 1/2 to drive up to 180.

It will take about 45 minutes to bring the boiler itself from a cold start to 165.

I think it's important to realize that this time frame included starting the fire in this brand new unit and then slowly adding wood to get the fire going (following the directions in the manual). Also the water was 56 degrees when I started the unit. There was no residual heat in the unit at start - up - The steel as well as the water needed to be heated. I set the high limit to 180. Later in the day, when the temp dropped to 170 and the fan kicked in to refire the stove(10 degree differential set by factory), gassification occurred pretty quickly and it jumped back to 180 in no time.

My delivery is usually bad on how i explain things. Not trying to pee on the fire so to speak. But my reference to the 12 hour cycle, was on the 1st time fire up. Well water temps. Fired off at 9pm, had house offline for 2 hours to complete hookup. it was -10 outside with a steady breeze.

And normal operation from then has been as much as 5 days without fire, and will still only take about 45 mins to get to 165, 60 mins to 180. But i think my boiler jacket is only 32 gals. important number to consider.

Sorry to sound like the jerk i can be.

congrats on the new profab unit! i installed the profab 200 last year after i caught my central boiler smoke dragon on fire and burned it and the buidling around it to the ground. I installed this new profab unit in the spring and I find then and and this fall its performance is AMAZING. I didnt realize how bad i had it with that generation one outdoor boiler.

I like the profab design, you can repair it with normal materials..fire brick and the like. Nothing on the unit seems to be a custome hard to find part. This year my wood is a bit drier and its working that much more better.

I do need to purchase a new wire brush to clean out the tubes, the one I had must of got rusty as it disintegrated.

Pictures, or it never happend.

Glad to hear you like the 200 Profab model. My good friend, is a Profab dealer in Naples, Maine, and is trying to get a foothold on the gassifier market her in Southern Maine. I agree with your assessment regarding the old style wood boilers (non gassifiers). Although they work very well, the amount of wood used and smoke created, is something I won't miss. I'd like to hear the story on how your fire started??????

HOW did my fire start? chimney fire. before i built a build around the old central boiler, i had quite a few chimney fires. Once i built the building around it i would clean it every six weeks or so but apparently that was not enough. I think the previous fires and the fact that i used a wire chimney brush may have compromised the zero clearance chimney ( as well as those fires) and it failed. at the time i fully took advantage of central boilers claim that you can burn any moisture content wood. anyway, there is a lot less cresote build up in the new unit and i bought 16 face cord of two year old wood for this gasser. Normally i cut my own wood but could never cut enought for two seasons..so i was always behind. the volume of wood that central boiler consumed made it impossible to get a year ahead! with purchasing a years worth while still cutting and splitting, Im now have this years wood and next years wood is almost finished. anyway, thats the story.

your friend is probably timing things right as all the old gassers will need replacment soon?

i wonder if I could order accessories from your profab dealer friend.

That's a sad story. Glad you are up and running now with Profab. What do you need for accessories? I will see him today ( we both teach at the same school).

i just need the two inch wire brush that comes with the unit, I will look for online resources..dont bother your friend, but thanks for the offer!

I need a gasket also, the gasket has rolled and its letting some smoke out..

good luck.
