We installed a new Jotul 118 Black Bear this weekend. Chose the stove as it had to go in a particular spot requiring a long and narrow appliance, loved the classic look of the cast iron, and it qualifies for the tax credit. We will be using it as accessory heat for our +/-1000 sq ft living/kitchen/dining area that has high ceilings and tends to be chilly in the winter. We're in the pacific nw so lows in the winter usually hover in the 40s. We've had inserts in previous homes but this is our first time with a new standalone stove. Have only done the break in fires so far but even with those low fires it seems to kick off the heat. Looking forward to having a toasty home this year!

Now if I could only figure out how to attach a pic....

ohhhh .. the attachment button .. those break in fumes must have been stronger than I thought!

Looks fantastic. Nice hearth too. That should make a really nice difference this winter.

Nice setup. Looks great.

oh man, that is sweet,i really like the look of the black bears and the 602,s just seems so refreshingly different from the standard square shape

Your installation ought to be in their brochure...looks like a marketing ad!

Well done! That is brochure quality for sure. That guy really pumps the heat off the sides and the cook plate on the top makes a great spot to keep the chili warm when the guys are over for football!

yeah, the pic looks brochure quality. The distance between the heat shield and the combustables looks too close, maybe it's just me. Congrats none the less, Jotul fan here for sure!

looks great! but isnt the back to close to the wall? what are the clearance on it?

With the rear heat shield and double-wall pipe this stove can get quite close to the wall. Something like 3" I think.

Thanks all, we're pretty pleased with how it came out. The hearth was probably the biggest pain, I forgot how much I hate working with slate tile (did the whole kitchen floor in it last year).

Yup the rear clearance to the wall is listed as 3", we erred on the side of caution and set it down at 4" =)

Sweet install! I like the raised hearth.

Just don't plug anything into those receptacles when it's running; you just might have some melted cords....

Beautiful installation! I grew up with two of these in an earlier generation, one upstairs and one down. Thirty years later and the stoves are running tonight, keeping my mom & step-dad toasty warm. No problems, no fuss, just bone warming heat year after year.

Congrats.

I really like that look. I like the contrast with the black classic stove over the modern pastels. That's eye candy.

Thanks guys, a year into it we are really happy with the stove. It does have a preference for dry wood (don't they all) but when burning the good stuff it cooks beautifully. Looking forward to another toasty winter!

+1 for a black jotul on slate.

Classic elegance , that's what that is.
Sometimes you just get it right
NICE JOB.
