So I need a stove for my shop...

There are several Big E's (all around $600-$650.00), an Englander ($500.00) and a St Croix Greenfield (4 years old and a multi-fuel) with the piping and hearth pad for $950.00.

I have a St Croix (10 years old) and it's been a great stove... but the Englander is 1/2 the cost (fuzzy math)...

Hmmmm.....

There are a lot of stoves on craigslist that are priced at 1/3 or less of the original cost. I find it hard to believe that people are buying new stoves in this economy. It is not like a used stove is worn out. All parts can be replaced and I read plenty of posts here about stoves less than 2 years old that need new parts. I have also heard that if the electronics in the control board do not burn out in the first 3 months or so, they are more likely to continue to work for a long time. The St. Croix sounds nice to me maybe you can put in in your house and put the other one in the shop. Good luck.

I couldn't agree more there are some great deals on CL right now. A few weeks ago I was able to pick one up for $450 with chimney pipe. Was out of a cabin and used maybe 5-6 times a year. There reason for getting rid of it was they were tired of filling it with pellets said it was to much work! I'd say buy used, I'm considering picking up another if the price is right just to have a spare.

With the great Tech support available by phone, and on the forum from Mike H., you know my pick......which model is it?

Well imacman the Englander guy never got back to me.....never found out the model#.

So I called the guy with the St Croix Greenfield stove...went to look at it and brought it home.

It really was a little more than I wanted to spend however this stove is like new. It was used to heat the basement rec room in a VERY upscale home. The owner is an out of work builder and his home is for sale. The last offer he had on the house included the stove but the deal fell thru.... so he sold the stove.

It's a four year old St. Croix Greenfield multi-fuel. He burned corn for two seasons then switched to pellets when corn prices went too high...last year he said he never fired up the stove. I got the stove plus the horizontal vent... didn't use an OAK. Plus I got the hearth pad which I probably won't use. I paid him $950.00... the stove is so clean I didn't feel right trying to wiggle a better deal out of him...it's just a fraction of what he paid and it was a fair price for what I got.

It's kinda funny how he told me how anal he was with cleaning the stove... he bought a Cougar ash vac so he could keep it clean... but when we pulled off the vent pipe it was 75% plugged with soot and ash... he seemed surprised that it would be that dirty...

This thing is heavy... I removed the outside cast iron panels and probably took off 100# pounds but we still had to grunt with three of us lifting the stove into my truck.

I am going to paint the stove Navy blue by order of she who must be obeyed... now I have to find the right paint for the job.

Doesn't sound like the stove is going into the shop after all!

Nope... the old pepin will see shop duty.

The Greenfield does not have an ignitor so my bride will have to learn to fire it up... she did last year when the ignitor went bad in the old stove... but she doesn't remember that.

Great purchase - this sounded identical to my story exactly 2 years ago! Only I paid $1400. Best money we have spent yet on our house.

I know you are a pellet officionado, but take my advice even though I am a newbie. When I bought this stove I had some issues. All it turned out to be was an extremely clogged up exhaust fan. I took it apart and completely cleaned it out.
I then found out about the little exhaust holes behind the burn pot. I now clean them once a week just because. It really does make a huge difference. Completely different stove now.

This will be my 2nd burning season with this used stove. Its my main soure we have loved every second of it. It sucks corn is so expensive. It burns soooo clean in this stove!

Best of luck and any tips you have please pass them along and I will do the same. This forum has been indespensible to me and I would like to keep it that way for me and others!

Do you have a Greenfield, too?

I can be pretty impulsive when buying but I guess I waited for the right deal. I almost bought a nearly new new Enviro and I'm sure i would have been happy with it... but I was hoping a good stove with a lower price would show up somewhere...

that is a really nice stove. What a good find. I bet your wife is going to be very impressed once it is up and running. She is going to have to master getting the fire going. But, being your wife, I am sure she can handle it.

Yep I have a Greenfield too! Mine is just cast black. That brown is really classy. That would have fit really nice in the scheme of our house.

But the black looks great too. I want to say that you might have been one of the guys to point me in the direction of how to clean the stove? If so you certainly know what to do! I think the people who had it first burnt it on '1' and it basically gummed up. Weak flame, tons of soot, etc. But after tearing it down from some great pics and people on here, voila, new stove.

As I have said, im a rookie. But its one heavy ass stove, built well and so far, heats great. Keep me UTD!

awesome!

can't wait to see install thread and burning pics.

Congrats on the new stove Krooser....sounds like you got a great deal!

St Croix removed the screen from over the glass on the Hastings this year. If you look at the picture Krooserr posted the screen is removed. Easy to do to your Greenfield and it really improves tthe look of the stove.

Wow, the wire mesh in the glass? Is that what you are talking about? How would you go about doing that? Any videos or instructions? I have the Greenfield and after re-looking at his pic I like that look much better!

Open the door, loosen the top and bottom screws on the hinge. Remove theother hinge screws. Remove the door. There are 4 screws on the door 2 at the top and 2 at the bottom. Remove all 4 screws. Push up on the screen on the side opposite the door handle. The screen glass and glass retainer will pop up. Grab the screen and slide it out the same side you pushed up on. Reasemble in the reverse order.

Hmmm, interesting. Ok I will have to look into that. In theory, would that help with heat transfer out the glass since the mesh would be gone? I would figure not much but it might be holding some back? And then that leads to my next question, why put it in there to begin with? Looks? I think without looks nicer?

Won't make any difference in heat transfer. It was originally put there to help with the antique look of the stove.
