when i bought my house, there is a fireplace with an insert in the livingroom but when i had the chimney inspected it turns out the mortar is no good. the chimney guy said because of the space inside the chimney there is not enough room to put in a liner but he could put in a pellet stove because they only require a 3 inch pipe. to have the whole thing re-done would cost around 7 grand. so the big question is, to they make a stove that isn't pellet and uses a smaller pipe, such as the 3 inch pipe instead of the 6? anything custom out there? barrel stove?

Randall, you have more stoves than we can keep track of. Is this the Buck you are trying to run? If so, what is the actual dimension inner dimension of the flue tile? There are solutions, but we need specifics so that we aren't sending you off on a tangent.

$7,000!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!

hard to believe that only a 3 inch pipe will fit.
need more info. pics would help too

Before you go any further. Get a second and third quote on that chimney health and rebuild costs. Unfortunately I feel that your odds of finding a crooked chimney company that builds crooked chimneys is pretty good. I'd call a "mason" instead of a "chimney specialist" if it needs to be rebuilt.

Get another opinon! If he is talking about the mortor between the flue tiles, that might be a good thing, it might make them easier to remove. :cheese: I think a good sweep would have recommended that the tiles be removed to make way for an insulated liner. It's not as bad as you might think.

+1 Karl.......I agree, there are a lot of so-called experts out there, but you need to get a couple of opinions before you throw out the idea.......worst case scenario, buy some class A pipe and a good freestanding stove, away from that chimney......you could get both the stove and pipe for less than 7 grand, and you won't have to worry about the flue cracking......

i'm going to call another company this spring and see what they have to say. i was just thinking along the lines if the power went out and the englander on the other side of the house couldn't do the job. one of those "in case of emergencies" ideas. just wanted to throw it out.

if i get the same from this guy then i will put in a freestander and a class A. lots cheaper.

thanks everyone.
