Went into the garage this morning and can't find my hand held kindling splitter! Had a lot of contractors in the garage lately. How low can you go? I'm in a foul mood now..So what's a good brand to purchase? Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated..Have carpal tunnel so I need something fairly light..I figure about 4-5lbs..

Saw a smart splitter from Topstak that looked nice but actually looking for a hand tool type. The Home Depot sells one with a fiberglass handle but don't know if that will last. At least I got next years wood stacked and stored. A short handle is easier for me to use. Thanks Guys...

That really sucks. Did you report the theft to their company? Fiskars makes some nice hatchets and axes. They are sharp and lightweight. The 2 ft one is only 3.5 lbs.

Thanks fellas..Didn't think to check Amazon for tools..The 3.5lb tool sounds right up my alley..Oh btw thanks for moving my new topic to the correct forum! Enjoy the remainder of the day..

Just ordered the lil sucker-Thanks again to all!

The Estwing "Fireside Friend" is another good kindling splitter.

i just use my fiskars splitting axe.

I also have the Fiskars. It works great, though I have a slightly larger version. Now that I see this one, I might be ordering it too. You know what? I never seem to have too few toys, aka "tools necessary for getting the honey do list done".

Here's mine.

Hello Everybody,

Thanks for chiming in..Dennis that is one hell of a splitter! Being Polish I wouldn't dare! No longer have a honey do list since I'm the only one left standing..lol..Amazon shipped my lil guy yesterday so I hope I will get it today. Cranked up my VC WinterWarm last nite for my first of the season run..Fabulous..nothing compared to a Woodstock Hybrid I'm sure..Congrats on your new stove..Loved all the pix from the open house..Thanks again and have a great day.

Piejam, good luck with that new splitter. Hey, I've worked with and been around enough Polish folks that I must be part Polish by now. At least I am qualified to tell a few jokes.....most of which I learned from the Polish. I fondly recall a really nice lady who ran an airport and I used to see her about twice per month. She always had a printed sheet with some new jokes and got mad at me if I didn't have any new ones. Dang I enjoyed those folks a lot.

Back to the original idea, yes, I learned shortly after getting our splitter that I can make kindling super fast with the right wood. We use soft maple and I just always save a few rounds that have no knots to make kindling.

Hey I'm Polish on both sides, don't have a snowball's chance in hell with that gene pool! went out to pick up a few things, just got back. My lil splitter was delivered..Just had to tell you guys thanks..Have to go out again but before I do, ran into the garage and christened the lil guy. Works like a charm..Light, smooth and sharp..Very happy..

Hey Dennis a few rounds to split? Now I know why Jake teases you!..Take care...

If yer anything like I (highly unlikely) and/or you garage is anything like mine, I'd think twice b4 accusing the contractor of stealing your splitting toy. Look around. It's prolly buried in amongst other toys with a bit more street value.

On the rare occasion I need some kindling, I take a piece of the driest oak I can grab, place the Monster Maul on the end, smack both down on the concrete floor.

Pay no mind to Jake. He still has not seen the light. Not sure if he is Polish or whatever but learns very slowly.

I did look around my garage..Yes it was my husband's man cave-no women allowed!..Looked extensively..Had more than one crew here so can't point a finger..Besides the new one is much better and it was inexpensive. If someone wanted it that bad, their welcome to it...Gonna hide the new one.

Dennis, my dh used to chain saw the larger logs into rounds. I guess he thought having chunks was better than all splits..Anyway I didn't ask but lmao when the crew picks on you...Never realized how much work stacking, drying, & rotating the wood is..Especially for you guys/gals who saw/split as well..Damn I'm tired! I mean I would gladly share with a neighbor but kill whoever takes without permission..

Last nite I was burning for about 4hrs..cruising at 400 was a beautiful thing. I supplement my heat but you guys may turn me into a fire breathing dragon before we're through! Thanks for all the replies..Didn't see Bfunk update his thread on smoking. Hope all is well with him. House is cooling off so I'll go and split some wood for kindling..

BTW the contractors have a bunch of framing lumber scraps on my patio. Douglas Fir I think and possibly some pine or spruce..Not kiln dried..Can I use this stuff? It would be a shame to discard in the landfill..No pressure treated scraps from what I can tell...

Come January when the outside temperature is hovering around zero and the wind is blowing 30 mph, you will be thankful you put in that work. For me, it is just a natural thing as I started the work as a little boy back in the 1940's. So the work just seems natural. Yes, there were some years when we burned fuel oil or propane....and I hated it. So I'll just keep on cutting and splitting and stacking and smile every time I walk past one of our wood piles. I just made a small wood rack for the new porch and as I sit here typing I can see part of it. The rack is nothing special but the wood in it is beautiful!

Hi piejam, I see you have carpal tunnel, I put up a post on here just the other day of my daughters invention the 'Kindling Cracker' one of these would help you out I'm sure, many people with arthritis have these over here and a friend of mine up the road has carpal tunnel too, she also uses one of these now with ease, you can see the feedback here http://www.kindlingcracker.com/happy-customers.html I thought is was worth a mention.
