This was standing deadwood which I just cut down. It has patches of white on the exterior. Can you tell me what kind of wood it is?

Methinks Firewood!

Can't really tell if it is an oak (or other hardwood) without the bark, or a smooth barked species with the bark still on. If that is w/bark, I'd say beech or hornbeam...both good for fuel. I'd defer to somebody local though.

The bark was missing when I moved out here a year and a half ago. And the white patches were there even then.

Kinda looks like some Red Elm I just cut. Can you get more end grain pics and pics of a split?

I'll add a vote for elm. The color and end grain looks like the stuff I cut every year after a couple more die. They hardly ever get too big, so it's right up my alley.

Looks similar to elm alright and if so it is good firewood. It will not split like you hear about elm either because it is dead and w/o bark. Should spit better and burn better too.

Sycamore???? Jus a guess

I also go with Elm, especially with out the bark, (Dutch Elm Disease).

The patching from the lichens/mold/etc give it a sycamore type appearance, but those wide rings suggest elm, which is probably what it is.

Sycamore or London Plane I'd bet. The sycamore I scrounged this year was pretty light weight, but felt well seasoned.

+1 Definitely firewood. These days all wood looks like firewood. I sometimes think I should cut my wood framed walls down and then think better of it, especially with winter coming.
