Hello all,

Second season with Harman P61 Non-Auto (basement install) and LOVING it. Well, I have not fired her up this season yet but I have 4 ton of Greene Teams in the basement waiting patiently.

Hopefully a simple question, but can I use a programmable T-stat on my stove? I understand it will not turn the stove off completely then re-ignite it, but to at least cycle it down during the day and turn it up when we get home from work? All posts I have seen regarding T-stats are in conjunction with auto igniting stoves.

Thank you for all useful replies.

Turbo,
I'm sure the experts will be chiming in soon, but my stove is also not a self igniter,,,,,it is capable of using a t-stat, which I installed at the beginning of last year. What the stat does on my Englander is this: I set the stoves settings on a realatively high setting, like heat 8 and blower 9,,,, and when the t-stat closes, (calls for heat), the stove works at that setting until the t-stat is satisfied,,,then when the stat opens, the stove reverts to it's lowest setting for heat, which is 1. (blower stays at 9 though),,,, so it just drops a few pellets every now and then,,,, to keep the fire going until t-stat calls for heat again.

THis has worked very, very well for me and if your stove has the capability for a stat on it's board,, by all means I recommend it!!

Hey guys how'd I do on 'splainin' that????

I use my P68 in manual mode, so I don't see why it wouldn't work with your P61.

That is, as long as you have an ESP probe. It takes some funky wiring, but its really no big deal.

Thanks,

I do have the ESP probe, and I currently have it extended from the basement to the second floor but it does not work the way I would like. I guess I could always try the T-stat. Looks like I have a project for my Friday off!

This sounds similar to the way that I've read the Europa 75 will work once I connect a thermostat to it. It will run on level 2 until heat is called for, then run at level 4 until required temperature is met.
This -should- save me some pellets once the shoulder season ends and I get burning 24/7. (Not to mention the added convenience of controlling the temp from upstairs since I have a basement install)

To start with, I believe that Harman recommends a distance of no more that 25 feet from the stove to the ESP probe and ideally you want it in the general vicinity of the stove. try relocating the probe to the same room, preferably in the direction that the heat flows. I think you will find that room temp mode will start working out a lot better for you.

Sounds like a plan. Actually, I meant the ESP probe was extended to the first floor, not second floor as in second story. Sorry. Maybe I will try that before the thermostat. All in all I absolutely can not complain about the stove. Last year worked out so well, but I like to play with things and if it will improve the efficiency of the stove I am all for it.

Thanks for all the input!!!
