Is it possible to tell what species a tree is without the leaves?

I can usually tell oak, ash, hickory, cherry. But lately I have been cutting/gathering trees that I have no idea what they are. Is there a website out there that has pictures or bark and/or ends of rounds that could help me match up? Or if is possible to tell without leaves maybe we can start a thread with pics and names of the species.
 
Like I've said before, the Audubon Tree book has pictures of bark, foliage and a description of the tree and where it is found. I purchased it for 19.95 and it has helped me immensly in figuring out what certain trees are.
 
That is the only way you I.D. trees is by buds. Get ahold of an area college that teaches any kind of forestry and ask what tree key they use. You can probably type "dendrology" in a search engine and get alot of info. That is the class that teaches plant I.D.
