thanks

What did you have to replace in your HEARTHSTONE 2? Lets see some pictures.

I will be rebuilding a HEARTHSTONE H-1 this spring/summer. I went to pick it up from a nice old lady at a horse farm this past Sunday. Damn thing is on the second floor. 4 of us could not get it down the steps. Problem was her grandkid and his friends(highschool kids), probably didn't weigh over 135lb. each soaking wet. Next Sunday I have 7 of us attempting to move this monster. Damn they are big.

I just E-mailed carpniels for some help on the rebuild. He is currently in the Netherlands. Should be back in 10 days.

i'll see what i can do about the pictures.
the h1 according to the manual is 720 pounds. good luck:)
the manuals for the h1 and h2 are the same manual and are available thru hearthstone.
i'm not sure about the h1 but everything for the h2 except the side posts and coal grate are available parts. call or email hearthstone for the manual and parts breakdown list.

my h2 needed to have the back liner and baffle replaced. i pulled off the top of the stove to make the job easier but almost had to take the whole stove apart. once you take off the top all the rest of the stone can come off also. the back liner which is cast iron was warped severely and in two pieces. because it was warped i had to take out the secondary burn tube and the baffle wouldn't come out thru any door. when i took off the top all of the stones came off because they are only cemented on the top with furnace cement. now all my stones were moving so i had to do over all the seems. i tried using this stuff from the fireplace shop called stove lining DON'T USE IT. it looks like a fire brick made into powder. you mix it with water and apply. the stuff when dry crumbles off at a touch. best stuff is furnace cement rutland makes it for 2000 degrees but if you find the same stuff i did at ace hardware it's made by a company called harvey. it's good for 3000 degrees. easier to work with. the rutland is black and smooth. it nice if you'll see it after the job is done but if it's going to be hidden use the harveys. it's like regular cement with the grit and gray in color. when i finally thru in a good fire today the black stuff was bubbling and the grey no problem. mind you the job was done a week ago and still bubbled.

now i just got to get the hang of firing this stove. the manual doesn't say to much about the temp it should be running at. it just states that if it makes 450 degrees surface temp then it's doing ok. i'm running 400 degree smoke pipe and the stove runs about 550 and it's still smoking outside. and it seems to be eating wood. i'm afraid to turn it down. i don't want to cake up the chimney. when i run my old defiant at 400 smoke pipe temp i get no smoke.

i guess it's trial and error.
i'll see if i can do something with the camera.
let us know how you did with your stove.

here are some pictures of the hearthstone2 i rebuilt.

triage if you need help ask and i'll help with what i can.
or email hearthstone. the woodtech guy is jim casavant. great help from him. and quick with a return.

woodmans was very quick also. i ordered the back liner on weds and it was shipped fedex and got here friday.

pictures

the top baffle was sagging bad

the back liner you see in the stove new look at the big h then look at the one i took out of the stove on the floor

one of these shows the cover on the right side that is the air inlet for the secondary burn tube and is hard to see but shows the space between the cover and the stone. the cover is designed for you to shut of the air incase of a chimney fire but with that space between the cover and stone it's not shuting off anything.

fbelec- Thanks for the pictures. The exterior of your H-2 looks to be in great shape.

I don't think we can get my H-1 down from the second floor. Also, the hallway is so narrow only 2 of us can go through it at one time. No way are 2 of us going to lift this monster.

I decided to take the H-1 apart and move it that way.

I just got back from the farm house. I could only fit half of the parts in my car. I hope to God I can get it back together. Its like a jigsaw puzzle. I also snapped 3 bolts and screws trying to get them off. Easy replacement.

Soot everywhere. Between the soot in the air, horse manure smell , dog poo from 9 dogs, and the cat urine in the house I thought I was going to suffocate. What a pig sty. I can't wait to get this thing out of here. I just have to take apart the bottom section of soapstone. Tomorrow.

My H-1 looks like no parts need replacing except the all of the gaskets. I'm going to clean her up repaint everything. I will probably rebuild the H-1 in place. Soon as I get the hearth done. Not till summer though. I'll let you know if I need any help. Thanks for the offer.

What have you found out about that Mansfield door??

Hi Dylan- I talked to Jim Casavant of HEARTHSTONE. He said that the Mansfield doors won't fit. Not even close. Thats OK. The doors on my H-1 are in great shape. Just need to clean the glass really good, some paint and replace the gaskets.

I have about 8 stones left and the cast iron bottom and rear section of the H-1 to take apart. About 300 lbs left LOL.

Going over there in the morning to finish it up.

Your right about the house. You should see the ash and soot on the carpet. I believe the house is getting either demolished or rebuilt soon.

WOW

triage that is a big firebox. tree trunks will fit in there. how big is the area you'll be heating?

looking at your picture i noticed the secondary burn tube is blowing up. i asked jim casavant about that because mine is blowing horizontal he said there was not to much difference either way. i think i might turn mine to blow up. horizontal it blows into the splits that my block it. if i don't have the stove running at over 550 stove top temp which eats up the wood it smokes. if i run it hard it doesn't smoke.

if i can give you a small but important piece of advice
dry fit every thing before you cement things together. the whole stove. i say that because when i was putting mine together i had a very hard time getting the top on so as the two bolts in all four corners at the top of the corner posts would screw in. if one side fit the other wouldn't.

good luck

give us some more pictures as you go

hey dylan

how did your h2 run?
did it smoke?
did it dirty the chimney?
how long of a burn would you get out of it?

Yes sir, this thing has a huge firebox. I'm only heating 2000 square feet.

Finally got the H-1 apart and transported home. In the process of taking it apart I found 2 cracked soapstones. I also snapped all the bolt heads off taking all the cast iron pieces off of the base. I guess the soapstone should be easily fixed with 2000 degree cement and the bolts will have to be drilled out and retapped.

Thanks for the advice on the dry fit. I'm looking at all the pieces right now and scratching my head thinking how am I gonna get this thing back together.

I have a few pictures of it in 100 different pieces for all of you to enjoy. I plan on starting on the cleaning of all the soapstone and repainting of the cast iron in the next month or 2 . I have a baby due May 1st so that might push me into summer with the finish. I definitely plan to have it all painted and put back together by August/September. I'll post pics as I go along.

Here is a pic with all the interior baffles, back plate assembly etc removed. I had a hard time removing the last 9 soapstones. They were really cemented in good.

However, I find that next-to-last pic to be very surprizing. What’s all that white (or light gray) stuff?? Ash? Did you not use a drop cloth and/or a shop-vac?? I know you said the place was dirty, but I pictured ‘greasy dirty’. The cabinetry actually looks rather new.

Did you use an impact driver on those bolts that got broken?? And/or a little PB penetrating catalyst??

Yes, that is ash. The place was truly disgusting. I work as a nurse and I KNOW DISGUSTING :)

The son decided not to clean the old ash out of the H-1 until I got there (he had 24 hour notice to clean it out). There was 6 inches of ash still in the box. He went ahead and cleaned it out when I first arrived and made most of the mess. I couldn't breath until the ash settled about 15 minutes later.

He told me not to worry about getting ash on the carpet. The farm house was being either demolished/gutted in the next 2 weeks (the horse farm had been sold recently thats why the H-1 was being sold along with everything in the house)

I used a socket wrench. I suppose I should of used a PB penetrating catalyst. Didn't realize the bolts would snap. Ohhh well........... live and learn.
