A co worker of mine was taking some wood from his pile and found deposits of small stones and gravel in it. anybody know what animal would do this? I was thinking chipmunk but I have not found anything on the net.

Mad Tom - that is a strange one - I find a lot of nesting material (grass, feathers, etc.) as well as food caches (acorns, etc.), but I haven't seen stone/gravel piles in the stacks, nor can I think of what might be bringing the material into the stacks. Hopefully your friend will see the culprit and you can let us know! I'd be interested to find out. Cheers!

My dog sometimes eats stones and craps them out but I doubt she has been near your friends wood stack. Sorry, I have no idea.

Yesterday, while reaching under the tarp to get some wood for the living room wood ring, I found "nesting materials" and no resident critter.

Good thing........coulda got BIT, I suppose.

Someone in here suggested the logical............wear gloves when getting wood from the wood pile.

was the pile affected by any flooding this summer, that could deposit stones near the bottom of the stack, obviously not too high up or the wood would have floated away

I've read that woodchucks use "gizzard stones" in their crops similar to a chicken. Just a thought.

Animals are like people, some do strange and unusual things. Last fall we had a grouse at my cabin that would come running out of the woods when we started up a 4 wheeler, the bird would mill around us with no fear, probably a chipmunk something like that putting the stones there. I had one collecting my daughters little magnetic letters that she left outside.

No, he lives up on a mountain. I am going to guess chipmunks. They seem to love wood piles. Sure is strange though.

I find nests in my piles that have some cloth mixed in, I always wonder where the varmints got the cloth material from.

MadTom,

The dirt that adheres to logs that have been skidded can wash down through the wood pile and leave deposits lower in the stack when it rains.

Was his wood skidded?
