at one point I heard the unit making like a grinding noise, I just unplugged unit for a bit then plugged back.

Just now power flickered again....crap....it might be nice having a battery backup so when this power surges happen for a few seconds the stove can keep running without issue..

It is recommended that the UPS be pure sine wave...I have one from amazon....its the one in my Sig....about $150.....my power has flickered a few times where it has had to turn on....didn't miss a beat....will run 30-60 minutes depending on blower speed.

I'm thinking of getting on too geek. Every time it flickers mine will put the board in default settings. That would be low fire heat setting 1. Also when it flickers as soon as power comes back on it puts the stove in start up so it goes straight to dumping more fule in and re-firing the igniter and air pump again. Plus if I get a genny, It will help clean up the power.

Let me know what you get, I haven't had time to go looking yet.

Car issues have me side tracked and fuming, Little red car lost a head gasket. So its "do we repair or replace it"?

I have been looking into getting one. Seems about $120-$150 is the average for a unit that will work for an average of 30 min (depends on draw and usage)
Want one for the Quad and the Fahrenheit... We lose power several times a year and lost it a few years back and had 3 floods (no battery back up sump pump) and also a Fire in the basement (candles downstairs to watch for water..)

Was a BAD year. . . To say the least. No one wants to wake up and not be able to see your hand in front of your face. Thank God it was not a total loss. We were asleep on the couch (bed inside it) and sleeping in front of the fireplace (only heat at the time) and woke up to horror.

On another note. Me and the Wife have had our Focus' for almost a year now and Love them. I drive almost 60 miles (57.5) everyday to work. 115 round trip. I get 36.1 out of it. The Fiesta is what I was going to buy, but I couldnt picture myself in it. I got the Focus with the SES package and sport 17" alloys. Looks much nicer than a Fiesta and gets almost the same milage. Also looked at Kia's but get a Ford discount where I work and buying 2 cars at the same time, allowed them to take more money off. (Always walk away and keep them guessing. It can always be cheaper than what they say)

Now back to regular scheduled programming .........

oh boy..... so much to learn.... for us newbies (and especially for me, someone with no technological sense!)... could you guys explain what those gadgets do? Automatic voltage regulator? full UPS? sine wave? I'd really appreciate it!

These are good for those 'brown out' situations because they adjust the voltage back up or down plus have surge protection.

Thanks for the link. Looks like something I should invest in. Our lights dimmed four or five times last night during the snow storm. We were fortunate enough to not lose power though.

Do you think this unit is rugged enough to put inline with a backup generator?

i can finally post here; i lost power Saturday evening and the news is that we may not see power within a week...!!!
No power, no water, no heat, no nothing, it's really bad...!!

Same here geek,

Work has power so I can check in quick like. Trees down all over. Had to drive from winstead to Thomaston just to find some warm food. On my way to work I saw bottom of East Main st Torrington now has power. Looks like BK for dinner tonight!

Tried the stove on the genny(small honda)seemed to do OK. But had to manually light it. Can't run much else with it on, So its a good thing the smoke dragon(wood eater) is still ready to keep us warm. No a/c required and we are now roasting! easy 80ºF in the basement. For as much as we are loosing power lately, Its looks like bigger whole house genny time. Auto on with auto switching. So adding the UPS's is going to be moved up to the top of the list

Stay safe and warm buddy. Hope power comes on quickly.

Are you running a surge suppresor in between the generator and stove? I used to hook up our generator all the time with our old Earth Stove, but I'm a little leary about doing that with our new stove. I'm hoping that APC voltage regulator linked above will offer enough protection. Going to order one asap.

Yes, I had the surge in circuit. My little Honda is a true sine unit. Very smooth power. But is just 2250 gross 2000 watt. So it doesn't handle a whole lot.

Geek, perhaps my son in law might be one of the ones who gets you back on grid.

He and a rather large number of folks got "wake up" calls to clear trees, downed lines, poles, transformers and replace same. While he may live in Maine when these things happen he can wind up anywhere.

Funny thing is two hours after he went through the door the power at his place went out.

Dang, we got alot more snow than others just a little south, but by paying the price of cleaning up 15-16' of snow, our power stayed on for the most part.

Lights flickered sat night and expected to wake up Sunday with no power and bent trees covering my driveway, but started as snow, so the leaves and tree limbs were not effected. About an hour or so lost overnight and that was it. Got up, re-lit the stove and went back to bed.

Hope you guys get power back soon !!!

I am now considering a generator, wifey is a Costco employee and they will have some this Wednesday I heard.

We really got slammed with snow, what they forecasted was about 6~8 inches in my area but we got way more around 15 or so.

Over 21" for my area. Heavy wet back breaking stuff! Killed my snow blower.

HOLY CRAP !!!! I thought the southern areas got only a few inches. I guess that was just the coast and inland got slammed. Areas of south/western NH got 27+.

looks like temps for the week will be in the 50s, so that is a good relief for now....my house was really chilly last night and this morning around 50~52 degrees.

Geek, I hope I'm not reading in this thread that you don't have your stove on a surge protector.....that can't be right, can it???? :shut:

OK, back home now and after watching some national news, I have a better handle on some of the real damage. I had power, but no cable/internet for a good part of Sunday so no news for me, plus all day cleanup outside.

All I can say is that we are real lucky around here. The snow did not stick and there is not any real tree damage. Prayers are out to all of those who are still in the dark.

We just got cold rain out of the deal but I can feel for ya folks. We have lost power for from five to seven days three out of the last five winters. That is why two genny's are in their own home just outside the breezeway entrance and 15 gallons of fresh gas are purchased every October.

Hang in there. Some very hardworking and brave people are out there untangling the mess for you as fast as they can. Thankfully they aren't having to do it in a freezing snow storm. I want to hug a lineman every time our power comes back on at one in the morning with snow still falling.

In fact I go to the co-op annual meeting every year just to thank those workers.

My house phone is VOIP so when the power goes, so goes the phone. But with the savings of going VOIP over fairpoint, for a little more, I have a smart phone. Droid, can go on line anytime, most anywhere and do almost anything my laptop can, (and then some). Can catch the news, and even keep up with this forum.
At first I hated that little key board, but then I found it has voice recognition and is very accurate. Even has a Ap that I can scan bar codes with and find out if what I am considering to buy is being offered at a good price, or where locally on the web I might get a better buy, or read reviews. The major challenge is keeping it charged.
