What was your stove temp? I think you have a hot stove choked all the way down with a load fresh enough to put out a fair amount of gas that is igniting. I've have heard that sometimes this phenomenon can occur with enough force (like a mini explosion) to push smoke out of the seams of your stove or even knock unscrewed pipes apart.
It looked under control to me but next time you might want to add a smidge more air to smooth things out.

Nice light show..I do that with my cat stove when I get bored...lol.
Just spontaneous combustion of the gasses.
Any back puffing through gaskets or joints?

Its getting just enough air to make an ignition but not enough to sustain the secondary burn. Happens sometimes with mine. Ill open it back up till its hot enough then slowly but gradually choke it back in stages. I figured it isn't burning as efficiently as it should be when that happens. I just looked over at mine and the constant blue secondaries were getting stronger after I had pulled it back to about 80% so I pulled it almost closed and now they're really blasting forward. My fire is barely doing anything but the stove is a nice 500 degrees.
I was about to click submit post and looked over again and it was doing what the vid shows. I tapped it back in about 1/8 an inch and its perfect. Maybe I shoulda left well enough alone. Im still learning and in my first real burning season with this EPA stove. I love it though.

PS, I got that mostly when I would pull the air supply back too soon and too much. I let this puppy get good and fired up burning now.

Moments before I took this video, mine was doing the same. My best guess is that there wasn't enough air to keep the gasses burning, or there were just too many gasses! Either way, I don't think there is anything wrong with it, and it's ultra mesmerizing. Probably good for the blood pressure just like a fish tank.

Mine aren't near as impressive, but here's my vid anyway. Keep in mind that this is on a stove without secondary combustion tubes.

It is called "woofing". Not enough air for the gases to ignite and when the firebox is filled with them and they get a sniff of oxygen it all ignites at once. The main reason for those three screws in the pipe on a free standing stove. So the pipe doesn't separate and ruin your whole day. With a liner so it won't blow the liner out of the flue collar.

BB, are you making this crap up? I totally buy the explanation, it pretty much says what we were theorizing, but you actually have a name for it? LoL.

So you're tellin' me I could have just said woofing? Live and learn.

Thank goodness for this thread. The day is almost over and I hadn't learned anything yet.

When my 30-NC does it you can hear the "crinkle" when the liner expands all the way up. And you have another sip of beverage and say "Thank you screws.".

Or in my case "duct tape." lol

Almost made it  . Only problem is for me that usually means something I actually need will now be lost forever.

Yeah that is the reason they tell ya to open the primary all the way before opening the stove door. Having it happen at the moment you pull that door open is an experience you and/or your eyebrows will not soon forget.

I've called it stove farts. Haven't seen one in yrs though.

my vc cat used to do that and smoke would come out the vents....just crack the damper a little or give it a little more air as others have mentioned and you are good to go.
