A new pellet stove owner at work(2nd year) almost had
a serious situation. He had flames shooting out of the seams
of his exhaust pipe. Pipe has a 5-6 ft rise then out the house.
His smoke detectors woke him up so he was able to shut stove
down and prevent a major fire. Cause: Creosote/Ash buildup which
tapping the pipe did not knock loose. He did not use a brush
while cleaning. He will from now on!! Thought I would pass this on.

How often should i clean the vent piping with a brush? My venting goes out the back of the stove to a tee and then up about 4 feet and elbows out though the side of the house. I bought a linteater brush set that says it works for 4" pellet stove venting. We will see I guess.

I'd clean it when you do your Harman "one-ton service."
Take a look at the amount of crap that you remove &
that will give you an idea of whether or not you can
go for a longer period between cleanings.
I brush clean mine once a year - just prior to the burning season -
& I burn the same pellets from one year to the next.
I remove a very small amount of ash from the pipes.
At my monthly (one ton) cleaning, I do go outside &
tap on the vent pipe - with the stove in "test' mode
to keep the combustion blower going - to blow out any
of the larger deposits, which never amounts to a whole lot...

Every ton is a good interval to open it up and check, it will actually depend upon how well the stove is setup and the pellets you are burning.

Crappy setup or real ashy pellets and things crud up sooner.

How well they go around corners depends upon several things, how flexible the shaft is, how stiff the brushes are, how long the brush portion is, and if there is some kind of guide ball on the end that can help guide the setup through the bends.

The more bends the less likely it is to be able to clean the whole vent from one spot even if the setup can turn a corner.

Sounds like the lint eater should work well then since I only have one bend, the rods seem pretty flexible, and the brush isn't too stiff and is only a couple inches long.

I purchased my lint eater from Lowe's. Works great.

My stove is set up with an inside clean-out "T" then rises about 4 1/2' to a 90 deg. elbow and through the wall to the outside.

The lint eater brush will go by the 90 deg elbow easily if you have it attached to a drill and are spinning it clockwise of course. Never run the drill counter clockwise or the brush or rod(s) might unscrew in the piping.
I don't use all the attachment that come with the lint eater such as the vacuum attachment. Since I already have the clean-out "T" open I have somebody hold a plastic bag around the pipe and I run the lint eater in and down from the outside.
