The snow storm took down alot of trees in our area. Bradford pears took it the worst.

All the bigger trees seemed to be oak. Maybe because oaks keep there leaves longer? and the heavy wet snow brought them down? All three trees I cut were oak. I got 6 pick up beds of oak. There's still so much more to get.

Nice Oak score. I saw on the news how back you guys got it up in North NJ. That sucks, hope ya didnt have any storm damage to your house or property. We didnt get one flake down here in Ocean County. I love splittin those big Oak rounds like that.

Cool score man. Get whatever you can and then split and stack that stuff up as soon as you can. Will take a while for it to get dry. Nothing like free wood. And free Oak. Sweeeeeet. Have a good one man. And good work bringing all that home.

basswidow, that is a super haul you got there.

6 pick up loads and more to come. Nice score !!! Sucks that they came down but at least they won't go to a landfill, or just be ground up.

North of Boston.. I drove only 1/4 mile, then 1/2 a mile. Oak is all over the side of the road, maple too.... Then I found a couple or trees I couldn't identify. Maybe poplar or basswood.

The great workers in my town cut it up to 3 to 10 foot lengths. I busted out my little husky and chopped them up so I could fit it in my truck.

Yesterday, when we all had no power, I asked the electric guy if I could take the wood on the side of the road. He said "you better hurry up because it will all be gone."
I hurried today and this evening. I think I may have a cord or 1.5 cords of oak and maple.. only two ticks that my wife pulled off me!!

The real beauty is that most of this came just blocks from home. My wife just called and said another big oak was bucked and cleared off a line and is ready to go. If there's anything left tonight - I will get it.

For those of us with OCD wood scrounging - this storm is quite difficult to deal with. Everywhere I look there's wood to get! I'm going nuts! And working myself way too hard. My back is screaming.

You ever run the chainsaw so much that you smell it and the wood for a whole day later?

I scored a huge oak at a christmas tree farm really close by and while I was cutting it, another guy said he was gonna get it, for the oak boards. But I already got the owners permission. I struck a deal with him to leave him the trunk. It was too big for my saw anyway - but he didn't know that!

Took me 1.5 hrs to drive 34 miles this morning due to all the roads closed, trees down, and power lines. I was doing the tree limb- power line limbo with my car! Some 20,000 are still out in my Sussex County and they've opened shelters. I saw a sign at a Gym this morning that said, "Out of Power - stop in for a shower!" Driving thru one neighborhood, it looked like a tornado. Every bradford pear looked like it exploded!

Guess there will be no shortage of wood for the next few years!

A lot down around my neighborhood but I haven't scored any yet. I feel bad scrounging for wood when almost everyone else in the neighborhood doesn't have power.

Going out for more this afternoon. I just drove by another elm somewhat bucked up by the town.

Odd path on that storm. In NYC, Central Park lost 1000 trees, but here on L.I. , I didnt see even one tree go down. Weird.

here's my storm damage :-(

That would happen to my truck the day I make the last payment.....man does that suck. We've got trees down in my corner of Connecticut, but some are still surrounded by wires, and most on peoples property who are not home because of no power....don't want to tresspass. I did hear a disturbing story today....a nieghbor down the street (don't know them personally) had a couple of big branches fall acroos thier driveway, the husband is a Fire Chief, so has not been home for days, and the Wife could not get in the driveway.....somebody driving by charged her $200 to cut the 2 branches and push them to the side so she can get in the drive....people here are getting gouged....also heard a story with another branch in a front yard....not against a house....on the ground....$1,000 to haul it away....I gotta start driving the hood with my chainsaw and donate some good will....can't garauntee haulin' it away, but if you leave it by the road, the town will take the brush....and the wood hounds (or me) will take the wood

Good for you BB. That is the way it should be when things get tough!
Oh, and by the way. I love your signature!

Bad Karma will get those who take atvantage of others during times like these.

One Oak I was cutting had down wires near it. I don't have a safe distance meter. I asked the township guys who told me to go ahead and cut on it - just be careful...... you never when they may flip the power on down stream or someone could back charge you will a generator. I took a long stick and moved a few lines (stupid... very stupid) but there was no sizzle. I cut it all staying as far away from the lines as possible. In hind sight - it's probably best to keep away from a scrounge like that and wait for the utility companies to make the lines right. No wood is worth losing your life for. I will think twice the next time.

Aw man . . . that's terrible Stevebass4 . . . poor truck looks like it's back is broken.

ya its not doing too well

There is wood every where around me too. I don't enough time or room at the house to take full advantage of it. Most of it will stay right where it is where I live too. I may be the only scrounger around. I have waited weeks, months and even years to pick up roadside wood.

Wow. That's wrong; very wrong. One would think they would want to help rather than gouge.

Get while the getting is good.
Very nice pile of wood, keep it coming. :)

I got an amazing amount of wood the last few days. I would say 50% oak, 30 maple and 20% I have no idea. Karma is on my side, I hope. A guy stopped by when I was loading up a bunch of oak with my wife. He offered to help me with this 4 foot of oak round laying on the side of the road. We did it.

I couldn't believe this guy stopped to help us. My initial thought was there was a problem, my wife too thought that. But no.. only help.
So when we were driving back to the house with my truck doing a wheely, I saw this older guy on the side of the road with his beat up chevy trying to load these huuuuuuge maple rounds into his truck. So we stopped and helped him. Karma is a good thing I would say.
