Hello

To connect a Thermostat to the Avalon Astoria you must use a Milli-Volt T-Stat.

1. Mount thermostat (Tstat)
2. run wire from thermostat to 2 connectors on the lower left hand corner of the Avalon Astoria Circuit board with door open.
the thermostat wires should be on the R (Red) and W (White) teminals and set to heat only.
3. Use Quick disconnect push on connectors and push on the Astoria terminals.

It is recommended to use a thermostat with a Swing Setting set at 1 1/2 or 2 such as a'
Skytech 5301P or a lower priced Ritetemp 6022 or 6025 or Lux TX9000TS T-Stat

If there is no swing setting then I recommend using the thermostat as a timer to prevent igniter issues and on/off issues.
Set 1st time setting to 80 deg F at 3:00 AM and the stove comes on to a lower heat setting. Then the 2nd time setting at 10 AM I set the stat to 50 Deg F to turn the stove off. For the time setting 3 and 4, I keep it set at 50 deg F so the stove stays off.
Simple cheap and works great. No igniter issues!

Wow. That looks simple! I wonder if it is that simple for my stove. I'll have to look into it sometime.

With the Harman stoves you need to wire the stat in series with the room probe.

I wish you had a Harman P43! The information you post is very helpful and you include pictures too. I think it's great that you post information like this as it will really help people out now and in the future. One of the many benefits of this forum. Just wish I could find info like this for my Harman. Thanks and keep up the good work.

Hi Joey
For your Lux TX9000TS series T-Stat (Set to Heat Mode)
Install Jumper from RC to RH if not there already
Then connect the 2 wires to W (White) and RH (Red Hot)

This T-Stat can be setup for 24 Volt systems or Gas MilliVolt systems.
So the Gas MilliVolt system is used here for pellet stoves and is why there must be a jumper from RC to RH.

SWING SETTING
A thermostat works by turning your heating or
cooling system on and off whenever the room
temperature varies a certain number of degrees
from the set-point temperature. This variation is
the "swing." Your system should cycle on about 3
to 6 times per hour. A smaller swing number
increases the number of cycles, so room
temperature is more constant. A larger swing
number decreases the number of cycles, saving
energy in most cases. To change the SWING value
from the main menu:
• Touch MENU.
• SCROLL to SWING VALUE.
• Touch YES. Adjust Swing Value will appear.

Good work Joey, Please let us know how that Lux works out. I may get one too.

2.25 swing means if you set it for 68 Deg F then the range is 65.75 to 70.25

So the stove will go off when the temp is over 70.25 and back on when the temp is less than 65.75.

I am very curious how many times it will cycle the stove on and off. It should work good but please let us know. Thanks

i am curious also when you say cycle your refering to how many times the stove turns on and off less say in an hour.......alot has to do with how good your home holds the heat correct....

Actually if you have it on from say 3:00 AM to 10:00 AM how many times does it go off. I run mine on 2 all that time and maybe I could save on wood pellets if I had a swing setting like yours.

One other thing I found is if you unplug the stove it resets the control board. So if you do that and switch it to auto and have it come on with the T-Stat the heat setting will default to 3. If you change that setting to 2 it will remember that and the T-Stat will always turn the stove on to 2.

So if the heat setting is 2 when the T-Stat turns the stove on from 3 to 10 that is 7 hours and then it goes on and off so that the total off time is say 3 hours then the amount of pellets used is 2.46 x 4 = 9.84 or roughly 10 lbs
So currently I use 7 x 2.46 = 17.22 or roughly 17 lbs so in one week I could save 50 lbs or 1.25 bags of wood pellets.

So if you can let me know how long the stove is off during that programmed time for one morning. Thanks Joey

Heat       Burn
Setting   Rate (Lbs/Hour)
   1          1.7
   2          2.46
   3          3.22
   4          3.98
   5          4.74
   6          5.5

I was going threw the settings and noticed a engery usage monitor on the t-stat gives you current day, yersterday usage and total usage and allows you to reset ..basicaly a timer telling you the hrs your stove was on for a given period...i can use that too as a reference...

Yes, Joey that is cool and should tell us what we want to know. This way we can see exactly what a Swing Temp programmable Thermostat can save over a regular programmable T-Stat used as a timer!!

Hi Joey

How is the T-Stat working? How often does the stove go on-off in an hour?
What does the Energy Use for one day say?

I am thinking of getting one also. Thanks

Hey Don sorry i forgot to change my email in my profile so i wasnt getting the messages...well i took a look at the usage from yesterday and it says 7.15 hrs but yesterday is probably not a good day to go by i will get a better usage on monday as i have it set for weekdays as follows again swing is set to 2.0 even : heat settings have been on 2 and 3

5:00 am to 9:00 am set at 75 -morn

9:00 am to 3:00pm at 63 so for the most part its off...-day

3:00pm to 11:00 pm at 75-even

11:00 pm to 5:00am - 63

This weekend i stood in bed a little late woke up at 10:30 am and house was at 68 cold for us anyway i had it on a weeday schedule...... so i have to tweak this week but the weekday seems to be working really good for me give me another day or two so i can look at the usage as i forgot to look at the previous week...but the lux t-stat is working great saving me from keeping it on manual an the swing seems to be really benifical i will get back in a few with the results...thanks
