So, i'm day 2 into burning with my BK princess ultra (i'll eventually post a review.. but it's looking good so far), and wanted to ask you veterans about reloading your BK. I have read the manual several times but have found some areas confusing. I have found that I prefer to keep the t-stat at setting 1 all the time (anything higher and my house is cooking).

Question 1:
If your t-stat is constantly on setting 1, when it comes to reloading, do you:
A- open the by-pass lever, open the door, stuff in your logs, close the door, close the by-pass, leave the t-stat at 1, and carry on with your day?
or do you
B -open the by-pass lever, turn the t-stat to 3, open the door, stuff your logs in, close the door, close the by-pass, let it burn for 20-30minutes on t-stat setting 3, then 20-30 minutes later drop it to 2, then 20-30 minutes later drop it to 1? ... this method allowing the cat to properly appreciate the correct temperature

Reading about the cat, it seems it does not like to have the t-stat switched too quickly, otherwise you will give the cat a misrepresented temperature reading. I can see method B working best on a fresh start up, but am unsure if this is true if the stove is still warm/in operation.

Question 2:
How hot is your stove upon reloading? After I reload (with the by-pass closed and t-stat to 1) the stove is HOT. I purchased the rear-shield, which gives my a 6" clearance to the rear wall, and I also have a heat shield mounted off the wall, and the heat shield is initially quite hot to touch. This lasts for about 30 minutes because I have an oscillating fan blowing directly between the wall and rear shield to cool it down. After 30 minutes, the heat shield on the wall is lukewarm. I will turn the fan to low and it's good for the day. I just want to make sure this is normal when reloading? I feel I should move the stove away from the wall a few more inches just to be safe, but I have also read many guys having to turn on their BK fans to cool down the reload process for the same reason.

I have no experience with a catalytic stove and want to ensure I'm completing the process properly.

Thanks guys!

I reload and turn the stat way up, Im not sure if my insert has the same number settings as yours, I let it rage for about 10 minutes then close the bypass and turn the tstat down a bit, once its up to temp I turn it down to 1 for the remainder of the burn, like you, I would get cooked out if it was higher. I know I burn through a load quicker since I have an insert and keep the blower on most of the time.
When I reload Im usually at 12 oclock (no temp on mt BK therm), sometimes its a bit lower maybe 11.

Thanks for your help. The t-stat on my princess ultra is 1-2-3 (low to high). I do not have a temperature on my catalytic thermometer either, but I think it's in the 12 o'clock position as well (i'll have to pay more attention to this).

I basically follow the manual.
Top of Page 35 :http://www.blazeking.com/PDF/manuals/en/wood/OM-KE PE E V1.11.pdf
I get faster into the active zone of the cat it I have a hot stove & a good bed of coals to get the new wood burning. (Stat on high) Then set to desired setting when cat active..

If your way works for you, good to go.

Reload is open the T Stat to wide open (passed 3). Open Bypass.

Fill stove full of wood.

Wait till it's burning good, turn down to 2. Wait till cat is in active, close bypass. Wait ~5-10 mins, turn down air to reg setting (for me that's straight up and down, 12:00)

If you open the door without the air wide open it will roll smoke out if there is a decent bed of coals/bit of wood still burning.

i like to burn it on a little higher setting for a little while before going way down. also just try and bring it down in steps. i like to go down by a half every few min when i bring it down.

I have recently been starting a fire when i get home from work. So I usually start around 6 pm fill the stove and burn and before I go to sleep I want to make sure stove is filled with as much fuel as possible. What I do is I turn tstat to full open bypass cat, then wait a few and slowly open the door a crack and wait I keep opening slowly until minimal smoke escapes and I put my new splits in. Then I let them burn high for 10-12 minutes and re- engage cat and begin to back tstat back down to 2. Dont know if that is correct or not but thats what I do and I get very good burn times and tons of heat.

We all have some different ways. Mine vary but how well the reload takes off, weather, draft, stove temp when reloaded.
Sometimes I do it like N60 does sometimes, fill it up, closer the bypass, set the stat, when I got other things more pressing right then.
Seems to work, I just get more smoky glass.
Sometimes I want to clean the glass & run it on high for 30 to 45 min.
If you have good dry wood, many methods work. :)

yeah its seems like we all have a little different method. i do like to keep the glass clean as well. plus i feel better even when its warmer out to just crank her on high to get that moisture of the wood before turning to low. (solars method). even with decent wood. i feel it sets up the stove better for the long smoldering burns, plus i still get nice 24 hour burns before reloading with lots of coals left to get a nice strong fire going again.
