Was walking at a nearby county park today, lots of downed trees from snowstorm and Irene. Came across two different trees, root systems right next to each other, came down together. All brush had been cleared away, no leaves to help with ID. First pic shows the two (labelled 1 and 2), second pic shows some stacked rounds from tree 2, third pick shows bark on 2, last pic shows bark on 1. Not sure who's cutting this up, might call the township office to see if any of this is for public taking....

Close-up of bark and end-grain would help. Ditto a guess as to density.
Looks like both are white ash.

1- ash or poplar
2- locust

That would be my guess too.

left bottom is poplar, right bottom is ash. check the wood on the left bottom tree when you split it to see if there is any green tint to it, that will confirm that it is poplar, poplar is not very dense but still good wood.

Grab them Ash rounds before someone else does. They are already bucked up,,,some easy splittin for ya.

I see two downed tress in pic. one. In picture two I see a pile of Ash rounds. In picture 3 I see a Black Locust trunk. In picture 4 I see an Ash trunk. Both trees are definitely worth taking. I'd ask first, but I think if somebody wanted the rounds they would have taken them when they were cut. Every scrounger knows you don't leave a pile of rounds in the woods.

The challenge is that it all has to be manually transported about a hundred yards up to where the parking lot is. No motorized vehicles of any sort allowed down in that area. Not the end of the world, but I think that might be enough deterrence to keep most people from quickly grabbing it.

Well, I asked. It's a county park, contacted the county office. Was told no scrounging is allowed :shut: ... the wood is used to heat county maintenance buildings.

Oh well, at least it's being put to good use.

County buildings = Any building a county worker lives in!
