It's a variable speed controller. It's a bit loud on high. I wonder if the high speed is better for heat exchange..... but I'm reading another post about cooling the firebox down that might inhibit combustion. I want the most BTUs available from my limited wood supply for this year. Thanks all. --Bri

If there were a magic setting they would all come that way. I say try playing around with it in reference to what sound level you are willing to put up with.

Perhaps even a ceiling fan running or an oscillating fan placed near a door way, or in the opposite side of the room could help you move heat around and not be too noisy.

Thanks Pen... It's not too annoying but not exactly quiet either. I just didn't know, heat wise, if pushing more air actually moves significantly more heat. I'm sure we'll learn in time this winter. --Bri

It really does take playing around with. Some people find that running the fan on high actually pulls enough heat away from the firebox that it has an ill effect on the burn. Don't know if that will be the case for you or not but you'll just have to experiment to see what works best for your home.

The best way to get the most BTU out is to have the blower as high as it can go/you can tolerate. I wouldnt crank it up until the fire is fully going. It may cool the firebox some, but not much relative to the heat being generated. That will get the most energy out.

My dealer stated that a blower on my Z42 would NOT increase the BTU output of the fireplace. I showed up to buy the blower during installation and they talked me out of it. I think some people who post on this site confuse the Z42 with an insert and think the blower is necessary. I have a 34' X 28' colonial style house that was built in 2005. After limited experience with this unit, I agree with my dealer. This unit has done a wonderful job without a blower. I also love that no blower equals; no extra electricity and no noise. Oh and it saved me a few hundred bucks on the blower itself. The dealer stated that the blower is useful if you need to move the heat a long distance. My install is centrally located.

I have an NZ3000 that I just got up and running 2 weeks ago. I called tech support for something last week on it and we got talking about the blower. He said that the slower the fan speed the warmer the air would be coming out since it has more time to heat up as it flows from the rear bottom up the back and then across the top and out of the unit. He said the faster fan speed won't allow the air to warm as much. Made sense to me, but I'm not sure how much difference it makes since you would probably put out more with a faster fan speed than the slower. Like others say I think you will just have to play with it in your house. Mine is working great on the slowest fan speed and keeps the noise to a dull roar.
