Well, today is the day. The installers are suppose to show up between 9:00 and 10:00 to get the T5 insert in (in Calgary this sometimes means that they will show up around 11:30)

I want to thank all of those who have helped my up until this point. I will try to post pictures in "real time" on the install. Only "glich" is that I have to take my son skating this morning @ 9:45, but my wife will be here.

Below is the "before" picture.

Hopefully they do show up and I will continue with pics on the progress.

It looks awesome! Wait until you have a fire in it.

Speaking of which, what ended up as the plan for the hearth extension?

Looks really nice..... Now we need a pic with a fire in it...

Looks Great !!!! Did everything go smooth? Did you end up going with a block off plate or just stuff insulation up there?

About time for a fire.....

I talked to my dealer today. They will here Monday the 21st. He says they typically use insulation vs a block off plate. It's not Roxul but he said it is quite similar.

Nice job. I hope you enjoy it. Give me some feed back how she burns.

:)

Yes, still need the hearth extension - that is "on order". The install guys were top notch - the sales guy is less so. I told the saleman that I needed the hearth extension 4+ weeks ago. I have a feeling he just ordered it today.

Two things I have to complete before I fire it up.

1. Get the hearth extension
2. Get the city to review the install

Thanks for everyone on this site for all the info/help.

I would fire it up right now, but need to get the hearth extension and the city to come by an okay it (also probably need to call my insurance).

Everything went very smoothly, the guy said the liner went down without a problem.

My guys just used Roxul - no plate.

I will have to wait on burning as I need to get a few things before I get going (the hearth extension, city inspection, call insuarance).

One more pic of the fireplace. It is nice how teh surround covered the brick that was removed (I am glad that I did this).

One pic of where I need to drill a hole into the cabinet to fish the wire through for the electrical

Thanks again for all the help everyone.

Off to run an errand. I will be back in a bit

Those T-5's are very nice looking inserts! I also like your existing hearth! Keep us posted along with pics when you start burning..

Congrats and good luck,

Ray

Okay - question, I am feeding this with outside air via the ash dump of the traditional chimney.

Below is a pic of the clean out.

Should I simply drill a few holds in the door of the clean out to ensure that the insert gets fed with enough air? Or will enough air move through the cracks between teh door and the wall?

Also, please, lets not turn this into an "outside air vs. inside air debate" - I have gone with the outside air.

Is there a conduit for the outside air within the ash chute --> T5 ?

IMHO, if there is not a 3 or 4" conduit to the outside the home, then it is not an OAK. Sorry to open the debate.

Otherwise, see how it works before you start drilling holes.

The stove it will need a generous amount of air, but as long as the area of the multiple holes are equivalent to about a 3" pipe or ~7 sq in. it should be ok. You'll want to screen them to keep out bugs and critters. Can the cleanout door be removed by pulling the hinge pins? If yes, you could put in a plywood plate with a dryer vent attached. Remove the flapper from the dryer vent and cover the end with screening.

Not saying it is an OAK, but it will draw from the path of least resistance which would be the ash dump. The T5 is built with the option of feeding via the ash dump or inside air. The decision is made at the install by deciding which hole to punch into the unit.

My inital thought was a dryer vent, but then I thought that drilling holes with a metal drill bit would be easier.

I think I am going to drill holes and screen it off. If this doesn't work, I will go with the drying thing.

Thanks for the feedback.

My wife just said "it looks really good". Well that is that ;)

Yup. You are golden. Wait until it warms the house.

Well that was a beautiful hearth to begin with and now it looks even better. Congratulations! The T5 looks gorgeous in there.
