There is a writeup about Mainers using 45% less oil. http://www.kjonline.com/news/mainer...2.html?searchterm=mainers+using+less+oiloften It gives credit to switching to pellets, wood, and insulation. While this seem encouraging , it goes on to say the the state's homes are still 70% oil dependent and that the average use was 1000 gallons a year. This article covers a time period of 2004-2009. Data so old I can't help but wonder how current it might be. It was fall 2008 when the there was a huge surge to switch to pellets and wood. Just look as so many of the dates of the memberships on this forum. There is a huge swelling of members in 2008. In 2008 pellets and stoves were hard to come by and the prices were what ever they wanted. Today I can drive around and find a dozen places to find pellets all within a 30 min drive from here. Hard to believe there isn't better data available to reflect the amount of oil being delivered to heating Maine. When I first put my pellet stove in, I was asked, "what are pellets?" Today, it is common knowledge.
I would have thought that a 45% reduction would have had a significant impact on the price of oil, but as you can see, this is not the case. Fuel assistance this year is less than half of last year when oil was a buck less a gallon.

I think China has a larger effect on oil prices compared to our usage. But what really efects the cost of oil is market shares and futures.

The USA is still the largest oil consumer in the world I think when all this heating oil is being sold there will be a surplus of inventory and if supply demand economics work you could have a dramatic price drop. All oil dealers know that most people cannot afford $850 every 5 or 6 weeks that is why so many dealers have gone bust.It will be interesting to see what happens in Dec and Jan with this demand destruction.

We use 45% less oil because it's all we got money enough to buy. Set the thermostat at 55 during the day, turn it off at night. I'm not kidding, I know people that do that, they have no choice, I do what I can to help out some folks down the road, get them some wood now and then, but they have it rough, a lot of folks around here have it worse.

I say we go back to whale oil....

And wait until someone bombs Iran because of nukes... oil will go through the roof making $4 per gallon look cheap.

When I moved to Maine, I bought a new home and installed that pellet stove PDQ!!! Best move I made. Gotta love using Maine and USA made pellets.

When I first moved to CT my house that I bought had oil -- always had natural gas. I remember in 1992 paying .60/gallon -- the full service guy was $1.00 gallon. I remember calling to find out why the big difference and was told by the guy that was $1.00 that theirs was "Premium" #2 Heating oil. HAHA! My first winter there was one month where I used 350 gallons -- 1960's ranch with one zone. I quickly converted to natural gas...but don't have the luxury where I live now.

I just took delivery of 126 gallons of oil since April. Burned around 300 for the whole year last winter. I use to burn about 750 gallons a year. Just using it for DHW mostly now. Oil being driven by speculators just like oil men have done for years. Buy in summer when it's low and sell in the winter when demand peaks. Maine is going to get a lot less help for heating assistance this year, maybe the government should help them buy a pellet stove so they won't be in the same situation next year!!!!!

A number of places have new natural gas service available and from the squawking out of the folks in Bangor there are a lot of new users. The utility and the street opening/closing process can't keep up with the demand.

I wish we could get NG here but I think it will be years. In addition, they were in the news trying to raise their rates. Not surprising as they to want a bigger piece of the pie too!

Yup let's fix the economy by reducing the funds to the people who need it! (LIHEAP)
Very nice of you to help your neighbors!!
I wish everyone that wanted to switch to pellets could afford it.

Problem is not goiing away and it's getting worse every year. What should we do as we are out of money? We need to stop relying on the government and start taking control of ourselves. We hate taxes but we want the government to do everything for us. We are broke, period! I want my fellow mainers to be warm too, but we have to change our habits too. My point was if you got people to switch to pellets, money would most likely stay in USA and probably in Maine.

Maybe the gov't should just start spending the money at home and not abroad and not on wars.

They ARE raising their rates to a tune of $20.50 more per month on average ~ that was what was reported anyway.
