Anyone own or built one of these?

I gotta have one.
An outdoor wood fired brick oven. Many of you know i make my own pizza.
Imagine backyard brick oven pizza. I have seen all kinds of food cooked in these.
Have i lost it wanting to build one? Anyone here have one or any experiences?

Cousin just built one. Takes something like 8-10 hours of firing to get it up to 700-800 degrees. Does a great job. There are lots of different styles. Doing one is certainly an art as much as a science in building one that will withstand what you are asking it to do.

I agree pen. I found a really good forum that deals in these. Tons of information there.
Many different styles and construction techniques. Very cool!
 
my brother built one a few years back and his also takes 12-16 hours to get to temp. There are many books on how to build one and he read many of them and settled on the style he has now. His is quite a bit larger than the one pictured but the same general idea. I do know it was not cheap and he did the work all himself, but his has a slate roof with copper flashing and trim. The pizza and bread's from that thing taste amazing! When they get it up to temp they will cook on it for a few days...it eats some wood! good luck with your oven
 
It's on my list of things to do, though not too close to the top. I saved what firebrick I could when I demo'd my fireplace, to use as a floor. Hopefully, I'll get a concrete patio poured in the spring. Then I'll be putting serious thought into it.
 
A local entrepeneur has one mounted in a trailer and hits the farmers market and fari circuit selling fresh wood fired pizza. He is going to set up next to a major snowmachine trail this winter. They are real good.
 
I got to use a wood fired ceramic kiln one summer in Maine. Took about 35 hours to fire and another day to cool down but the wood ash made a great glaze.
 
Someone on here built one last year. It was pretty cool.
 
fornobravo.com provides free plans. excellent website. calculate the costs involved and you'll see they are not cheap even when done by yourself. i have amassed everything but the fire bricks for the one i intend to build.
 
I guess i should have searched for it here first. And not started a new thread.
I have been all over that site Boom Stick, a very good resource.
I think they are so cool and would have a blast building one. Hopefully next summer.
 
Is the heat different in a wood fired oven than in a gas or electric oven?

Was he ever on TV? Saw a setup like that when the wife was watching a Food Network show once.

I downloaded and printed off their pdf file plans for the pompeii oven. I really like that website, especially some of the amazing ovens that people create in their backyards. Like I mentioned, I need to get the firebrick but should be able to do so for around 300.00 or so new. I have a bunch of the other things needed. My father in law is from Naples and that is what his family used as a primary oven. He has built them before and will more than likely have to "advise" me on building one. Having one in the yard would be amazing! Best of Luck

Yes. A pizza will take about 90 seconds or so in a fired up wood oven. The way it is built creates a convection that moves the heat round. Essentially they create blistering heat of 8-900 degrees. It creates flavor that you cannot fake much like good bbq does.
 
there's a guy on here who just built one this fall, it is fantastic...I plan on doing one this summer in our backyard, if you have never eaten wood-fired pizza yer in for a treat, it is FANTASTIC......so is the bread that you can bake in these ovens......there are a lot of good plans on youtube, also......do a search on Hearth.com...you should find the guy who just built one, hes in New York....

AMEN....that is the way pizza was intended to taste.....anytime we're on vacation and I pass a wood fired pizza shop I almost wreck the vehicle trying to get stopped, I love that stuff!
 
There's a guy here in Bend who has the whole setup on a trailer. He'll bring it to wherever you want it and cook pizzas for your guests. Something like $15/head, but there are some minimums/conditions attached to the cost. I've never had it, but I bet it's darned good stuff. Rick

Seen one of them up this way at the American Folk Festival . . . and my next door neighbor and his son fire one up for the Commonground Fair . . . still haven't scored a free pizza from my neighbor though . . . :(
 
Only time I ever got to eat a wood fired pizza was in France. I really like the idea of one of these to cook in during the summer months. I could get into it big time, and I have been looking over plans for one.
